If you’ve earned yourself a Formula 1 victory, you probably deserve your own Porsche. And you probably shouldn’t have to ask your dad’s permission to get it.

But that’s what 18-year-old F1 phenom Max Verstappen had to do in order to purchase his Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Apparently, because of the pro driver’s age, all major purchases first have to be cleared by Verstappen’s father and his manager.

“If Max wants to buy something big, he must get permission from us first. Like now with his private car,” said Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, according to the Swiss newspaper Blick (via AutoWeek).

At a price of nearly $400k, that means Max had to get permission to buy the GT3 RS, which he purchased to celebrate his impressive early F1 successes. The Dutchman has already won the elite Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini award in Italy, as well as his first victory in Spain. And he’s also riding high after moving from Toro Rosso to Red Bull.

Of course Verstappen’s father could have said “no” to his son’s request, “But Max is very sensible on normal roads.” So he gave Max the thumbs up.
