Luftgekühlt 5 Delivers Stellar, Star Studded Porsche Lineup

Luftgekühlt 5

From stunning vintage race cars to incredibly rare street-legal Porsches, Luftgekühlt 5 quite literally had it all.

Porsche events and showcases grow like leaves on trees. And yet not all are created equal. Just take the relatively young Luftgekühlt, for example. The brainchild of two-time Le Mans class winner Patrick Long and noted Southern California designer Howie Idelson isn’t just your average car meet in some random parking lot. In fact, the dynamic duo go out of their way to find venues as unique as the cars that participate each year.

But Luftgekühlt 5 clearly takes the cake for having the most unique venue yet. This year, we were treated to an amazing lineup of air-cooled Porsche nirvana amid the historically significant confines of the Ganahl Lumber Company South Bay in Torrance, California. And as fascinating and unique as the setting turned out to be, the cars were even better.

Our brother site 6 Speed Online was in attendance and snapped a few photos of the carefully curated lot. Aside from the venue, one of our favorite things about Luftgekühlt is that Long and Idelson go to great lengths to feature cars that are either historically significant or just plain interesting. And amid this functioning lumber mill, we found plenty of rides that brought the wood — literally!

There was Jerry Seinfeld‘s 1949 356/2 coupe and a stunning 1968 Porsche 908 Works “Short-Tail” Coupe. The latter of which is coincidentally up for grabs at this year’s Monterey Car Week auction. There were plenty of gorgeous race cars, including an 804 Formula 1 car and a 917/10. And lots of rare street rides including a one-of-six Schuppan Porsche 962CR and 904 Carrera GTS.

Unlike many overly stuffy, unnecessarily competitive shows, Luftgekühlt is just all about appreciating cars. And that’s exactly what we saw this fine weekend. No fancy black tie affair, this event is all about soaking in unique and rare Porsches in a casual setting. All of which is what makes Luftgekühlt perhaps our favorite show of all!
