RENNLIST REVIEW: Luft Celebrates the Art of Air-Cooled Porsches

World-class photography, stunning designs come together to form 260 pages of pure 911 hero worship.

Enthusiasts could argue, quite easily, that the air-cooled Porsche is a literal piece of art in itself. You don’t need a world-class artist to capture its innate beauty, either. But those of us who don’t belong to the jet-set crowd can’t exactly walk around and look at 911s all day. However, there’s a new, rather classy way to enjoy the classic beauty of Porsche — with The Luft Book.

The Luft, or as the Germans call it the LufgekĂĽhlt (which literally means “air-cooled”), is 260 pages chock-full of stunning 911 photography. Pieced together by Porsche factory racing driver Patrick Long and designer/art director Howie Idelson, the book was inspired by the LuftgekĂĽhlt gathering they created, itself a celebration of all things Porsche. The infamous meet just wrapped up only its fourth year but has already become a must-see for air-cooled enthusiasts.

The duo got the idea for the meetup after attending far too many stuffy shows full of pretentious folks who didn’t drive and enjoy their cars. Long, a Porsche FIA World Endurance Championship racer, obviously isn’t the type to pamper his cars. He and his childhood friend Idelson dreamed of creating an event that celebrated the culture of the air-cooled 911, not the collectibility.

Now you can relive the show any time you like, from the comfort of your living room. And rest assured, The Luft, which retails for $120, will make your coffee table look even better because you can pick it up with either a slate gray or ruby stone colored dust jacket. And it’s all protected by a screen-printed slipcase featuring those iconic Porsche lines.

The package is every bit as classy and almost as good looking as a vintage Porsche itself. And who wouldn’t want a conversation piece like that laying around?
