If You Know What to Look for, You Can Snag a Nice Porsche 996 for a Penny and a Song

When it comes to the long and illustrious lineage of the Porsche 911, the 996 sits low on the list. From its peculiar styling and potential reliability issues, it has been the black sheep of the 911 range for years. Thankfully, that makes them cheap, and if you know what to look for, you can snag a nice 996 for a penny and a song. Mat Vlogs from Carwow has been eyeing himself a nice, used 911 for a while now, and he made the great video below documenting his search and purchase.

The car is an early 3.4-liter model from 1999, and while we are not certain if the video was designed purely as a buyer’s guide, it works out that way. Vlogs starts off strong by asking the dealer for all the history he can get, only to find out it has nearly a decade of servicing at that location. A strong service history and record at a dealer is a huge plus. From there, Vlogs goes the extra mile and shows lots of great tips for all used car buyers.

Not only does he actually touch and feel wear items — like brake rotors, to better gauge their condition — but Vlogs also looks under the car for extra signs of abuse. He even pulls open the front trunk’s carpets to inspect for signs of damage, after seeing signs of repainting. Then he moves on to grilling the dealer about the known problems with the 996-generation engine.

Finally, Vlogs ends with a drive, followed by a short haggle session — which is interesting since Carwow advertises a special “no-haggle” car buying service. Regardless, if you are thinking about grabbing a 996, or any car really, this is a great video to help you get the best deal possible.
