Default 996 Stereo Upgrades in Here

Hello 996 owners and the like . I am looking to upgrade my head unit and perhaps my amp/speakers. I was hoping we could get a thread going with pictures of your stereo systems and details of your setup. I would like to integrate digital music into the scene and potentially ditch CD's all together. Let's see what you got with the Pro's and Con's of your system. Let's rock it out....thanks for your input in advance.

I came across this device the other day. If you had an aux in (for example if it bypasses your cd changer), it might be a good solution for Bluetooth streaming and phone integration while keeping everything else stock.

A lot of guys have done a double DIN. Search those 2 words. Personally I haven't had the radio on for 2 years.

I have a eclipse unit but too afraid to turn it on as I'm always listening for any death rattles. I'll most likely be selling my Tubi's and going back to stock and weld in additional resonators to further aid in listening to my engine.

Eclipse single DIN, Boston Acoustics Speakers, stock Hifi amp.

Pros: cost effective yet great SQ, Bluetooth, mp3/iPod integration, auto-tune like Audyssey, single din to keep the distractions out and driving in.

Cons: red or blue selectable display doesn't match dash, boo hoo...

I upgraded my entire system a few years ago. Here are the highlights:

- Kenwood DNX-6960 double-DIN head unit
- Focal four channel amp mounted in the frunk where the CD-changer used to reside. Custom mount built and new custom carpet installed in cargo area.
- Focal speakers installed in factory locations, using factory speaker grills. Custom mounts built for door mounted sub-woofers.
- Custom sub-woofer box fabricated and installed in Bose factory sub location. Covered with new carpet.
- Antennae for Sirius/XM and GPS installed on the front bumper, hidden underneath the front bumper cover.
- Custom iPhone mount built into dash underneath head unit
- Mic located in factory location

Pros:

- Outstanding sound quality
- Modern navigation system
- Sirius/XM, Pandora and iPod connectivity
- Good appearance, matching lighting, etc.

Cons:

- Expensive installation
- Limited functionality of Bluetooth phone connection due to noise levels in the cabin while driving
- Poor AM radio reception (I occasionally listen to talk radio)

Overall, I'm very pleased with it.

I put in a double DIN system which includes CD, DVD, Navigation, Phone, Ipod, Satellite radio, Bluetooth, Pandora, etc.

But, as stated above, a rather expensive install.

+1 ... I have a cab, so the soundtrack is pretty much engine, tires, and (if the top is down) wind. I guess I could play music now that I have the hard top on for the winter, but I never seem to bother.

Even though I don't use it for music very often, my car has a double DIN Kenwood unit, including iPod integration. I installed it mostly for the Garmin nav, which I like a lot better than sunction-cupping a portable nav to the windshield.

I have a similar one in mine from the previous owner, and while the NAV is nice, I am considering a single DIN. Touch screens look great until you have to take your eyes off the road to use them. My particular models interface is incredibly slow as well. God forbid you hit the wrong funtion because it will take a fairly long time to get back to where you were. And forget scrolling through 1000+ songs on the iPod, I just leave it off most of the time

If you do go touch screen, by all means try and test it out in person first

I have a fusion single din, mechless, usb, sd card, fully customizable color to match interior lighting and flat black finish when it's off.

Love it even though it's mostly off. Listening to the afterhours exhaust instead.

I wish head unit manufacturers would get rid of those 14-segment displays. It is 2014 and they look so rubbish IMHO...

I kept reading "iPod mini" and couldn't figure out (1) where it was (2) what the big deal was.
Having reread it I'm suitably impressed

I almost have the identical setup as Dennis C, except i used the factory Bose speakers plus an Alpine amp,and i added a complete radar and laser jammer system with a stealth installation for the controls in the ashtray.same results, great navigation, fantastic audio improvement, and yes the bluetooth for the phone is a little sketchy due to cabin noise, you might have to pull over to make or receive a call. I also used a company called Kuda that make the mount for my Iphone, the mount looks like a factory piece ,even has the same graphite grey leather to match. and yes a little pricey.
