Tuned 997 Turbo Makes a Case for Tiptronics with Massive 760 Horsepower at the Wheels

Tiptronic-equipped Porsches don’t exactly get a lot of love these days, not even when the auto box comes attached to a turbo motor. But as Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire found out, that doesn’t mean they can’t be fast. That much is evident after taking a canyon stroll in this Koncept Motorwurks built 997 Turbo.

Koncept specializes in Porsche tuning and service. But aside from changing your oil and filter, they’ll also build you a blazingly fast machine, like this 997 they built, one that produces an astonishing 760 horsepower at the rear wheels. It’s no surprise that Farah wanted to try it out.

What is surprising is that squeezing that much power from a stock 997 isn’t as hard as you might think. Koncept retains the stock turbos but massages them out to 65mm. They then stuff bigger compression wheels in there, upgrade the injectors, install a better throttle body and intercoolers, and tune it all up. That’s it.

But the best part might just be the price. All those upgrades only cost around $20,000. Talk about a performance bargain, even when you figure in the price of a used 997 Turbo. And even though nobody’s going to underestimate a 911 of any ilk, you could even call this one a bit of a sleeper.

There is a downside, of course. As Matt finds out while driving the 997 through some twisties, the automatic isn’t great. This particular car might be a total rocket on the drag strip, but the shift points aren’t ideal for cornering. Matt describes it simply as “frustrating,” but that doesn’t ruin his fun, obviously. On the bright side, nobody wants the Tiptronic. Which makes them cheap.

So, if you’re looking for extreme performance at a bargain price, a Tiptronic 997 Turbo tuned by Koncept Motorwurks might just be your ticket.
