Porsche dominates recent J.D. Power vehicle dependability study. The brand ranks number two overall and the 911 and Macan take top spots.

Porsche builds several highly desirable vehicles. Although to be fair there are a number of automakers that make desirable vehicles. However, Porsche not only makes them desirable but builds them to last as well. J.D. Power has been publishing various automotive studies for many years. Porsche has been doing quite well in these studies as of late. It shows that their cars not only appeal to buyers but also serve as reliable transportation for years to come. That trend continues.

The J.D. Power 2021 Vehicle Dependability Study has recently been released. The study looks at the long-term dependability of 2018 model-year vehicles. In this study dependability means not just that the vehicles don’t leave you stranded on the side of the road. It also takes into account things like the entertainment system, the air conditioning system, and driving experience. In total 177 specific problem areas are analyzed. Over 33,000 original car owners were surveyed for the study. This year the Porsche 911 was named as the most dependable model overall. Porsche as a company finished second overall, behind only Lexus. The Porsche Macan was named the most dependable compact premium SUV.

Porsche Macan

This is an impressive showing for Porsche. Especially when you consider the fact that the 911 and the Macan are not exactly basic transportation. They each have quite a collection of high-tech features. They are also purchased by folks that tend to push their cars a bit harder than the average consumer. Yet, despite that, the Porsche just keeps on ticking. As Ferry Porsche once said: “Our cars are meant to be driven, not polished.” It seems like that is still the case to this day. Go out and drive your Porsche, it can take it.

In the 32-year history of this study, never have vehicles overall proven to be so dependable. According to J.D. Power vehicle dependability is at an all-time high. The overall level of problems cited by owners declined 10, percent from a year ago. The industry average is 122 problems per 100 vehicles. Top ranked Lexus came in at 81 and Porsche claimed the second step on the podium with 86.

We are sure that it will come as no surprise that the least dependable brand was Land Rover. Land Rover owners reported a whopping 244 problems per 100 cars. The fact that Porsche has about 30 percent fewer problems reported compared to the industry average is extraordinary. The next highest ranked European luxury brand is BMW which landed in eleventh place.
