If you owned this 911 Targa, would you even bother putting the top on?

We aren’t always at a race track. The thought of blasting down the Mulsanne Straight has gone through all of our minds, but that’s not possible in stop-and-go traffic. That’s why it’s OK to sometimes dial things back a bit and relax. This is where Porsche‘s 911 Targa comes in. Open-air motoring at relaxed speeds has a lot of appeal and this more polite Porsche looks like a ride we could fully support.

This Targa is painted in the lovely shade of Baltic Blue, with classy Linen leather interior on the inside. Condition is reported to be excellent, as all points of inspection are rated at 4/5 stars. Motivation comes from Porsche’s 3.2 liter air-cooled flat six, with enough shove to reach 60 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds. Top speed is an impressive 152 miles per hour.

The market for thirty year old Porsches such as this one has become interesting. Values are still interestingly low. While 996 Porsches still offer the best bang-for-buck, these later edition Carrera 3.2’s offer air-cooled performance at an incredible price. The price for this Targa, when converted from GBP to USD, comes in around $42,000 dollars. With a full service history and thorough background, this 911 is far from a basket case. Just get in and drive.

The racing pedigree of this car is the only thing that’s missing. It also isn’t the top of the range Turbo model either. But as stated in the leading paragraph, we aren’t always at a race track. Sometimes its nice to just enjoy the open air rushing past on a deserted back road.

Would now be the time to pick up a cheaper air-cooled Porsche? We think so. There’s still something cool about a Porsche, no matter the vintage. Even though the oil crisis, Porsche performance did not suffer as much as the neutered V8 brutes from American manufacturers. While there’s many ideal years to look for a 911, there’s not too many years to avoid, either. That makes a Targa like this something to really consider.
