RM Sotheby’s auctioning off huge collection of Porsche memorabilia that includes vintage clothing, home accessories and a classic toolkit.

If there’s one thing the internet has taught us, it’s that almost everything you ever wanted but couldn’t get at a certain time eventually pops up for sale later on. Whether you wanted a Porsche toy car way back when you were a kid or have been looking for a vintage Porsche toolkit, you can now bid on it without worrying about reserve prices. RM Sotheby’s is auctioning off a massive collection of Porsche memorabilia that goes back decades. There are so many pieces in it that the auction house has had to split it into two installments of roughly 250 pieces each. Bidding on the items in the first half started June 22, and will close, June 30.

This huge haul of goodies comes from a dedicated single-owner collection. According to RM Sotheby’s, it includes “a wide array of rare and desirable collectibles, including early factory gifts and promotional items; factory-printed materials, including commemorative racing posters, sales brochures, technical literature, press releases and kits, and service manuals; and Porsche toys and model cars.” These are some of the highlights from the first installment.

Portable Seat for Watching Polo

Apparently, back in the early 1960s, Porsche 356 owners enjoyed watching live polo games. To make the experience a little more comfortable, Porsche offered this portable seat as an option. All the dedicated fan had to do was jam the bottom spike into some soft earth, flip out the two halves of the seat on top and sit down. When you flex that hard and in such a specific way, you deserve a little rest.

Retro Down Jacket with Credentials Sleeve

Members of Porsche’s pit crew not only need to be fast, but they also need to be visible. This wine/white number surely helped the person who wore it stand out. Judging by the quilted down sections, it must’ve kept them warm during races in cold climates. A clear credentials sleeve on an elastic strap made it easy for the pit crew member to get where they needed to go without a hassle.

1980s Porsche Paint & Trim Options Portfolio

Thanks to its transparent case, this assortment of paint samples and leather and carpet swatches from the 1980s can go anywhere. We know just the place to put it: On the coffee table in your fully furnished garage filled with Porsche posters, keepsakes and, of course, a Porsche vehicle…or two.

1989 Frankfurt Motor Show Press Kit & 1:43-scale Porsch Panamericana Concept Car

Whether you attend an auto show as an enthusiast or a member of the press, you end up leaving with a lot of swag. You quickly learn that not all of it is created equal. We like a promotional stainless steel travel mug as much as anyone, but it sure doesn’t beat this combo. It includes press materials from the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show and a 1:43-scale version of the open-top Panamericana concept car that Porsche built to commemorate “Ferry” Porsche’s 80th birthday.

356 A Toolkit

Some people pay outrageous amounts of money for obscure memorabilia associated with celebrities. We don’t quite understand that obsession, but we can relate it to. It would be so cool to get this small, functional part of a Porsche 356 A. The only problem would be getting it autographed. Who would we even ask to do that?

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum and Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Derek also contributes to other outlets. He started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to get even more automotive content out to fellow enthusiasts.
