Here’s How to Install the Porsche Roof Tent on Your Ride

Porsche Roof Tent Installation

The relatively new Porsche roof tent is incredibly easy to install, as well as a pretty cool way to spend nights in the wilderness.

It’s been roughly two years since the official Porsche roof tent debuted, which was developed at the Weissach Development Centre and co-designed by Studio F.A. Porsche in Zell am See. The clever and potentially useful piece can be mounted on the 911, Macan, Cayenne, Panamera, and Taycan with or without roof rails, and features enough room for two, along with three windows, insect guards, and a rather attractive design. It’s easy to see the appeal of the Porsche roof top tent – and as we can see from this recent video from the brand itself, it’s also pretty easy to install, too.

This process starts by sliding the fastening brackets into the grooves at the base of the Porsche roof tent with the tightening screws facing outward, along with the end caps. From there, you’ll need a couple of friends to lift the tent onto the roof of your vehicle, after which the screws can be tightened and anti-theft locks installed. From here, opening the tent involves unlocking the canopy locks and opening the two safety straps, then lifting the tent up – from here, a pair of gas dampers does the rest of the work.

Next, one can swing out the back of the underfloor and secure it with the ladder, which is best placed at a 70 degree angle and with all of its sections firmly locked into place. From here, one can climb on up and use the four spring rods in the tent to shape it, which are stored inside the tent in a pouch. If one desires, the included rain cover can also be installed using the two front spring rods, and there are also elastic straps at the bottom that can be locked in place to further secure that piece.

Closing the Porsche roof tent is easy as well – remove the elastic bands for the rain cover, unhook it from the spring rods and store them in their pouch, retract and secure the ladder, then pull the straps to close the lid – after which one simply hooks the security straps and secures the locks. Porsche also offers some optional equipment that can be added to its roof tent as well, including an extra inner portion to help keep it better insulated in cold weather, thermal blankets, and organizers for shoes and another for bags and other types of items, which can boost the utility of this already rather utilitarian piece.
