2022 Porsche 911 GT3 GT3RS 992

Porsche has a live countdown to the reveal of the next edition of the iconic GT3 lineup, and it has some features we are super excited about.

Since the debut of the 996 911 GT3, the iconic GT3 badge has remained synonymous with the epitome of Porsche performance. They carry the heritage of the predecessors. For example, the 993 GT2, the original 911 R, and, of course, the Carrera RS models. Additionally, they lay the groundwork for future models by setting a bar so high that only the cream of the crop in modern engineering techniques and technological advancements are capable of dethroning its competitor. This is likely the reason we have yet to see a 992 GT3—however, it’s been brewing not-so-silently in the background. Now, Porsche is ready to set it free.

On February 16th, 2021, Porsche is live streaming the reveal of the next generation GT car on the NewsTV Porsche website. Unfortunately for us on the other side of the pond, time zones aren’t going to make live viewing all the pleasurable for us. The stream will start a 6 am Pacific or 9 am Eastern. We suggest you brew some coffee, though. We’re confident it’ll be worth the watch.

Keeping Tradition Alive

Though the standard range of 992 911s comes turbocharged end to end, the GT3 will stay true to its heritage. Rumors say it will come with a 4.0-liter flat-six with natural aspiration—no forced air on these babies, just a good old high revving boxer engine.

Obviously, as is teased in the silhouette above, the new 911 GT3 will come stacked with a large wing. This is only appropriate, as we’ve grown quite accustomed to seeing them on these cars. It isn’t just the flashy yet functional aero on the car to get excited about, either. While the aggressive styling of the GT cars is nothing short of iconic, there is a bit more to it. Underneath the flowing exterior is track-oriented suspension, which you won’t find on a lower trim 911. Various sources say that the next generation GT3 has a whole new bag of tricks for making it a fierce track weapon.

Grip the Road Like Never Before

According to Autoweek, the new GT3 will get a double-wishbone front suspension in place of MacPherson struts. Indeed, this 911 may well be the grippiest and fastest road-going 911 to date.

Furthermore, Porsche purists can let out an enormous sigh of relief. It seems Porsche is keeping their ears open for their fans because the official word is the new GT3 will be available with a manual transmission. While we love the fearsome rapid shifts of the PDK transmission, we definitely get where you’re coming from if you’d prefer a proper manual.

We’ve been waiting for this announcement since the launch of the 992 and then some. Of course, the countless spy photos of GT3 mule cars and their wings that no amount of camouflage could ever hide have left us restlessly waiting for the day to come. Needless to say, we are beyond excited for the reveal.
