Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport vs 991.2 GT3 Cup Road America

High-horsepower GT2 RS Clubsport faces the lighter, track-focused GT3 Cup car at Road America.

A question we have come across more than a few times is what is the difference between the Porsche GT2 and the GT3? And in particular: Which car is faster? The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport is pumping out some serious horsepower. And the 2018 991.2-gen GT3 Cup car is designed to be on the track. Going head-to-head, these two competitors are well-matched and epitomize Porsche excellence. Who takes it on the track? Let’s go to the video.

The Porsche Club of America put together this match. It is an outstanding opportunity to see how numbers and specs translate in real life on the road. The proving ground is Road America, and the winner is anyone who loves Porsche.

Owner Steve DiMakos is featured in the the video, talking about the match up, and the car. And what a car. The GT2 RS Clubsport runs on a 3.8-liter flat six twin-turbo that makes a bone rattling 700 horsepower. Weighing a hair over 3,000 pounds, it is heavier than the GT3. But based solely on the powerhouse under the hood, it is definitely at an advantage.

Speaking of advantages, this Cup car was acquired after it successfully ran the German Porsche Supercup, won at Monte Carlo and other events. It still wears its former racing decals. Owner Steven Anderson says the car, which has been tuned pretty extensively for track performance, makes about 485 horsepower. But it is lighter to the tune of 2,646 pounds.

So, the GT2 is the clear winner, right? Well….It is easy to assume that with a 215 horsepower advantage this is going to be a sure thing. However, the GT3 Cup is lighter. Additionally, it has had more performance-tuning, and is an already proven race car. It is definitely going to be a tight race.

Behind the wheel of both is driver Leh Keen. Keen is an experienced Porsche driver, who coincidentally owns one of the coolest Safari 911s we’ve ever seen.

Keen takes hot laps of each Porsche on the same circuit. The camera work is exceptional in this video, giving us in-cabin and dashcam footage. We also get a chance to hear both the GT2 and the GT3. Both engines are different, but each possesses a throaty, roaring exhaust note.

Of course we won’t spoil the ending, but this is a thrilling shootout. Each car has distinct advantages, and each handles differently. To be honest, the results are interesting and the video is deeply satisfying. Both are exciting, powerful cars, and Keen is a masterful driver. We’d be curious to see this pairing tackle another course to see if the results varied.
