RENNLIST: Porsches @ Long Beach Grand Prix

Acura may have its name all over Long Beach, but the GMG Porsche display was where it was at this race weekend.

Porsche has always had a home at Long Beach, California. In 2007, the RS Spyder took the whole podium in the LMP2 class in the American Le Mans Series, while the 997 GT3-RSR took second in the GT2 class that year.

Fast-forward to this past weekend, when one of the only two Porsche 911 RSRs entered into the IMSA Bubba Burger Sports Grand Prix at Long Beach by the Porsche GT team took home the win in the GT Le Mans class, adding yet another podium finish for the team in the 2019 season. Of course, they weren’t the only Porsches hanging out at Long Beach that weekend.

We found ourselves hanging out near the Global Motorsports Group display near the festivities, where they had all of their 911s out, like their 911 GT3 R entry in the 2019 Blancpain GT World Challenge, piloted by team owner James Sofronas and team member Brent Holden.

After their debut outing in Austin, Texas at the Circuit of the Americas, the duo’s 911 GT3 R is third in the standings for the Blancpain GT World Challenge Drivers’ and Teams’ Am Cups. Not a bad start for GMG, whose next competition will be April 27 and 28 at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia.

GMG doesn’t just build race cars, of course. They also bring their experience to your 911 GT3. The white and blue examples next to their Blancpain GT car have just a handful of all the things they can do, from a simple exhaust upgrade and a set of wheels, to custom software tunes to make you feel like you’re one of GMG’s team drivers.

The only thing we think would be cooler would be to have Porsche be the sponsor of the grands prix at Long Beach. But at least we get to enjoy some of Stuttgart’s finest on and off the street circuit.
