Gearheads Revive Porsche 944 As A Christmas Gift For Pro Drifter Friend

An old Porsche 944 gets a thorough makeover for Taylor Hull. But he won’t drift it. Instead it’s a Christmas gift for his wife.

It’s surprisingly easy to think of the Porsche 944 as a 20-something year old car. Sorry for the reality check, but the newest one is 33 years old. That means one of two things. Clean ones are increasingly difficult to come by. Fixer-uppers are a lot more common than one would think.

Thankfully, that second thing means that some 944’s can be had for a song. Deals are ready to be had, and that’s what Jared from Questionable Garage has set out to do with this 944. But better yet, he’s doing it for a good cause.

Jared and Formula Pro drifter Taylor Hull were both after this car, but Jared got the jump on it first. Jared being a super cool guy has decided that it should go to a very deserving home, and had worked out with Hull that they can both work on it as a Christmas gift for Hull’s wife. Now that’s cool.

Work started with getting the engine running right. Fuel systems get clogs and gunked up when sat for long periods of time, and this 944 is no different. Jared focused on fuel delivery first. Being a DME unit on this Porsche, electronics can play up and cause trouble. Crank-no-start scenarios are somewhat common. Turns out the new fuel pump that was installed was wired incorrectly.

After the pump issue resolution, regular wear items became next on the list. Belts, seals and more are all easiest done when the front of the engine is off. Ignition items are taken care of too. While it’s not a full step by step guide, the scope of work done should be an indicator of what you’re in for with a 944 refresh. Break out the tools, the tunes, and some cold beverages and you’ll be set for an evening of Porsche revival.

Mechanical issues sorted, the paint needs attention next. Because this car has sat unused for a while, the single stage red paint has seen better days. A simple clay bar and quick buff brought out a respectable amount of shine and deeper red for the presentation on Christmas Day.

We know it’s after Christmas now, and we see a 944 as a present. But what did you get over the holdays? Any cool items from Stuttgart’s finest?
