Zufferhausen Powers Up Among Record Entry for WEC ‘24, Le Mans

No less than five Porsche 963 Hypercars will grace the full-time entry list for the 2024 World Endurance Championship as published by motorsport’s FIA governing body this week, while two new Porsche 911 GT3 Rs have subscribed to a full season in the all-new LMGT3 class.

The record thirty-seven car full-time WEC ’24 grid comprises no less than fourteen manufacturers, the most ever in the series. That includes a best-ever 19 Hypercars and an 18-strong entry of all-new LMGT3s.

Looking at the list, Porsche has the most Hypercars. Penske Motorsport continues with its two 963 Hypercars. Matt Campbell replaces Dane Cameron in the Number 5 alongside Michael Christensen and Frédéric Makowiecki in the number 5 car. Kévin Estre, André Lotterer and Laurens Vanthoor continue in the Number 6

Three Privateer Porsche 963s for WEC ‘24

They will be backed by three privateer Porsches. There will be a couple of Hertz Team JOTA 963s for William Stevens and two others in the number 12. Oliver Rasmussen is confirmed alongside two drivers yet to be named in car 38. Proton Competition has entered the fifth 963 Hybrid Hypercar, with Harry Tincknell so far confirmed as driving that 99 car.

The Porsche army must deal with a couple of world champion Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 Hybrids, and now three Le Mans winning. Ferrari 499P Hypercars. Add a rumbling Cadillac V-Series.R, and two improved 9X8 Peugeot. New to the WEC Hypercars, Alpine returns with two all-new A424s, BMW M debuts a pair of Hybrid V8s, Lamborghini arrives with its SC63, and Isotta Fraschini has entered a new Tipo 6-C.

The WEC ’24 Hypercar entry list is still likely set to grow, especially once the season starts. A number of additional privateers also said to be waiting in the wings. Teams traditionally also bring extra cars into the fray at Le Mans, and at some of the other races too.

Manthey Will Run Porsche’s New 911 GT3 Rs in LMGT3

Moving on to the new for 2023 LMGT3 class, endurance racing legends Manthey have been charged with running Porsche’s pair of new 911 GT3 Rs. Car 91 in EMA colours for Richard Lietz and two as yet unnamed drivers, and Aliaksandr Malykhin, Joel Sturm and Klaus Bachler in Purerxcing’s number 92.

LMGT3 has attracted 18 full-time entries. Porsche’s rivals there include a pair each of Ferrari 296 GT3s, reigning champion Corvette Z06 GT3.Rs and Aston Martin Vantage GT3s, McLaren 720S GT3 Evos and Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2s. Add MotoGP god Valentino Rossi in one of two BMW M4 GT3s, a pair of Lexus RCF GT3s, and two new Ford Mustang GT3s.

The World Endurance Championship expands to eight rounds in 2024, starting with a new outing in Qatar on 2 March. Imola replaces Monza as the Italian round in April, before Spa on 11 May, and Le Mans 15-16 June. Then it’s another new round at Sao Paulo, before returning to COTA in Texas and then Japan and Bahrain.
