Buy a 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 Before It’s Too Late

718 Boxster GTS 4.0

The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 might be the best pure sports car in the Porsche lineup, but it won’t be around for much longer.

The Porsche Macan and Cayenne are the sales leaders, the 911 is the iconic face of the brand, the Taycan is the EV, and the Panamera is the sedan. With all of those Porsche models vying for attention, the 718 can get a bit overlooked. And even within the 718 lineup the RS cars grab most of the attention. But the best pure sportscar in the 2024 Porsche lineup just might be a 718 model. The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 to be exact. A lovely mid-engine roadster with a glorious flat six belting out nearly 400 horsepower. The car is an absolute peach. But it will probably not be around for much longer. So, unless you are comfortable shopping on the used market (and there is nothing wrong with that) your window to buy one is closing fast.

Recently a Canadian journalist from Autoguide wrote a review of the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and it reminded us of how special the car is. We thought that this would be a good time to show a little love for the GTS 4.0 and to remind all of our readers that this car is still out there. It might not be a GT3 RS or a 911 S/T, or Spyder RS, or even an all-electric Macan. But it is an honest, simple sports car. And it just might be the last one that Porsche ever makes.

Interior

The Boxster GTS 4.0 has been out for a few years now, and I don’t think it is worth doing a detailed review again here as that has already been covered many times. But it is important to call out what makes this car so unique in the Porsche lineup. The new 2025 911 GTS model was just revealed. It is faster and has more technology than ever. But it is losing some Porsche-ness. No manual transmission, no naturally aspirated engine, no analog gauges, and no ignition key. All things you can still get on the Boxster GTS. The 2025 911 GTS Cabriolet is nearly 600 pounds heavier and over $80,000 more expensive than the Boxster GTS. The Boxster is a smaller and simpler car.

The 718 Boxster is closer to what the 911 of old used to be like before it morphed into a large GT car. The 911 has more outright speed and prestige but the Boxster is the more engaging drive. A sports car should be about the drive, no? And with a 0 to 60 mph time of around 4 seconds and a top speed of over 180 mph the Boxster GTS 4.0 is not slow.

Downsides

Porsche Boxster

The Boxster GTS 4.0 is wonderful but like all cars it has flaws. Yes, you can get a manual transmission, but it has long gearing that takes a lot of the fun out of it. The interior is starting to look dated. I owned a 2016 Cayman S for years, and the interior of the 2024 Boxster doesn’t look much different than my old Cayman. And while the Boxster might be a bargain compared to the silly expensive 911, a nicely equipped Boxster GTS will be well into the six-figure range. But it is just an epic car. With all the performance you really need, and none of the fluff that you don’t.

End of an Era

Boxster GTS 4.0

The Boxster is going electric. It will almost certainly be a stunning performer and many of you are probably excited for it. But it is going to be a different experience all together. The days of the Boxster GTS 4.0 are numbered. If you like the pure Porsche experience that made the company into what it is today, you have very little time left to purchase what will likely go down as an all-time great.
