2016 Porsche 911 R

Porsche 911 R is rare beast, combining the power of the 991 GT3 RS engine with a manual transmission.

When the Porsche 991 911 GT3 RS was introduced, it was a track-friendly beast with 500 horsepower and 338 lb-ft f torque. It also had a suspension system, braking setup and aero kit that made it an excellent option for someone who wanted to be able to drive to a road course, kick some ass then drive home in comfort.

The key complaint from enthusiasts about the 991 GT3 RS was the lack of a manual transmission. The 7-speed automatic was the better choice for most racers, so that was the standard unit, but three pedal-lovers wanted a combination of the GT3 RS power and a manual gearbox. To satisfy that demand, Porsche introduced the 2019 911 R, but it was limited to just 991 units. They were hard to get when new and in the few years following, prices climbed up into the half-million-dollar range. Pricing has dropped a bit since then, but they are still hard to find.

Fortunately, there is a 2016 Porsche 911 R in the Rennlist Marketplace by site sponsor “GRPerformance” that is part of the Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program, but with just 37 miles on the odometer, this is as new as you are going to find.

991 911 R Details

As mentioned above, the heart of the 2016 Porsche 911 R is the same 4.0-liter Boxer-6 that motivates the 991 GT3 RS. The engine offers the same 500 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of torque in both cars, but the 911 R offers the fun of the manual transmission. The package also came with specific stripes and some cool retro-style seats with plaid inserts between the leather bolsters.

Collector’s Pricing

While the combination of the GT3 RS engine and the manual transmission made the 911 R unique, what made it collectable was the extremely low production numbers. Only 991 units were produced for the entire world, making them hard to get. As a result, they were quickly being resold for well above the $184,900 MSRP, with some reports highlight prices nearing $500,000.

2016 Porsche 911 R

This 2016 911 R is listed for $344,950, nearly double the MSRP, but if you want a 991 911 R with such low mileage, you should expect to pay well above MSRP. After all, while this car is technically pre-owned, it is practically new, with just 37 miles on the odometer. This rare car demands a premium price in any condition, but after more than three years, the buyer of this car will be paying for the fact that someone kept it in like-new shape since it arrived from the plant.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
