911 GT1 Inspired Porsche Spotted at LAX Has Everyone Guessing

911 GT1 Inspired Porsche

Car spotted at the airport is clearly 911 GT1 inspired, but is it a new Porsche supercar, or a restomod from the likes of Tuthill or Singer?

For Porsche enthusiasts, and car aficionados in general, it doesn’t get much better than Monterey Car Week. Car shows, races, auctions, vehicle debuts, it is all crammed into one incredible week on the Monterey Peninsula. One example of what makes this such a special week is this 911 GT1 inspired Porsche that was recently spotted at the Los Angeles International Airport. The mystery car is likely headed to Monterey Car Week. The picture posted on Reddit by user lfn1993 has sparked quite a bit of conversation. What exactly is this thing?

At first glance it looks like the rare 911 GT1 Straßenversion hypercar from 1998. Although closer examination shows that it is not one of those multimillion-dollar cars. But the looks are clearly GT1 inspired. Would Porsche build a restomod of one of their own cars? The company is all about heritage, so it is not beyond the realm of possibility. But perhaps it is a new creation from the likes of Singer or Tuthill.

The internet is full of ideas. There are even several posts in a Rennlist forum thread about this very car. The good news is that we will likely know very soon exactly what it is. But until then we can have a bit of fun speculating.

Tuthill RSK

The Rumors

At this point anything is on the table. However, the leading theory regarding this car is that it is the latest creation from Tuthill. It will be formally revealed this week. Tuthill has given us some incredible Porsche restomods over the years. The RSK pictured here is just one example. It not only looks amazing with hand painted details, but the 4.0L flat six powerplant and bespoke suspension ensure driving thrills as well. The RSK is a stunner without question. But it is no GT1. And if the 911 GT1 inspired car that was spotted at LAX is the next big thing to come from Tuthill, the motoring world is in for a real treat.

1998 GT1

911 GT1 Straßenversion

It has been over 25 years since the 911 GT1 Straßenversion hit the streets. Some Rennlist readers may not have even been born yet in 1998 so we thought a quick overview would be helpful. The Straßenversion is the road-legal version of the 911 GT1 Evolution race car. Porsche built just 21 examples of this car. It was powered by a 3.2L flat six engine that made right around 540 horsepower. The lightweight body was made from carbon fiber. 0 to 60 mph can be reached in about 3.5 seconds and the top speed is 192 mph. Not bad for 1998. Today these cars trade hands for several million dollars.

We don’t know any details about this new 911 GT1 inspired car. We are not even 100 percent sure who built it. What we do know is that a 2024 version of a 911 GT1 Straßenversion is a thrilling prospect.
