2025 Porsche 718 Cayman/Boxster Turns EV?

In two years, we’ll be looking at Porsche’s first EV sports car — an all-electric version of the 718 Cayman/Boxster.

Yes, Porsche technically has two electric sports cars — the Taycan and the Cayenne — but the Cayenne is still available with ICE engines, and the Taycan is a whole new addition to Porsche’s lineup. Making the 718 Cayman/Boxster an EV, though, would be the first time a model was converted from an ICE and offered only as an EV. Porsche is rightfully a little nervous, considering how popular the 718 is as an ICE bearing car. Though, with the Cayenne EV and the Taycan being as popular as they are, there’s hope yet.

Porsche was smart about this one. The 718 is a mid-engine car, which helps give the 718 it’s unique handling abilities. To help maintain the original spirit, Porsche will mount the 900 volt system where the engine would be. That way, the tail can still be thrown out for funsies if they driver so desires. All while helping preserve the planet for the next generation.

Additionally, Porsche plans on offering the 718 EV in different configurations, including the original rear-wheel drive setup, a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup, and a top-tier performance variant that will likely make over 1,000 horsepower.

So, What’s the Catch?

The main concern, obviously, is how well the EV would be perceived. For 25 years, the 718 has been one of Porsche’s more popular peppy two-seaters, next to the 911. Having the gasoline engine ripped from under the hood to be replaced by a silent EV system could easily isolate a large portion of Porsche enthusiasts. Or, it would be the start of something great. After all, having over 300 lb ft of torque be available instantaneously could make the 718 a lot more fun.

Whether or not it takes off, we’ll know by next year. Exact figures haven’t been published, but the 2025 model year will likely go on sale late next year. Prices also aren’t published, but it can be assumed that it’ll be a pretty penny more than the standard model.
