2020 Porsche Taycan Leaves Doug DeMuro Breathless

By -

YouTuber loves the Taycan as soon as he gets behind the wheel, concluding it’s the best thing Porsche has to offer right now.

The 2020 Taycan is an incredibly important car for Porsche. It might even be a seminal vehicle for the entire industry. Basically, a lot is riding on Porsche’s first fully electric product. The company’s current situation isn’t dire. However, if the Taycan flops, it would present huge problems for the automaker.

Fortunately, YouTuber Doug DeMuro echoed what a lot of publications are saying about the Taycan. It’s a legitimate luxury sedan with the performance chops of a standard Porsche. In fact, DeMuro thinks it’s the best new Porsche money can buy. His endorsement is extremely encouraging for those who were concerned about the brand’s pivot to electric vehicles. And it’s a sign that Tesla might have a true competitor for the first time in its history.

Unconventional Openings

DeMuro always beings each review by showing viewers the featured car’s unique qualities. For the Taycan, his approach was no different. In fact, the Taycan has a lot of interesting oddities and cool things worth mentioning. Porsche outfitted the sedan with door handles that share an aesthetic with older cars. There is a twist though. When DeMuro put his hand underneath the handle, it popped out. That allowed him to easily open the door. He found Porsche’s door design very easy to use.

Additionally, DeMuro loved how Porsche designed the charging port doors. To access the charging port, all an owner needs to do is slide their fingers underneath the black piece next to the door. Once the Taycan senses movement, it will open. But the door doesn’t pop out. Instead, it slides away into the body of the car, which enables the Porsche to look very classy while it’s charging. “This operation is by far the slickest of any charge port door I’ve seen in any electric car,” says DeMuro.

An Excellent and Quirky Interior

DeMuro definitely liked the Taycan’s interior. Not just for the quality, but also because it offers a unique experience compared to other cars. Porsche created several different ways for owners to interact with the car’s infotainment system, which is situated directly above the center air vents. If desired, owners can use the lower touchscreen as a mouse pad of sorts to control the top screen. But the upper screen is also controlled via touch, which amused DeMuro. “You have a screen that controls a screen. And these two screens are only about eight inches away from each other! It seems ridiculously redundant but it’s there as a supplementary control to the upper screen,” says DeMuro.

What’s in a Name?

DeMuro also took some time to address the people who hated Porsche’s decision to use “Turbo S” as a Taycan trim level. He makes some very good and extremely funny points about how the Taycan relates to other cars with similarly styled names. “How can you take car names this literally? Looking around this parking lot, do you think the Chevy Trailblazer is out there blazing trails? Do you think the Toyota Highlander is in the highlands? No! It’s sitting in a parking lot in suburban L.A. next to a Prius,” says DeMuro. There is more to his rant, but ultimately it’s a well deserved rebuttal to those upset about the Turbo’s inclusion in the Taycan lineup.

A Thoroughly Engaging EV and an Excellent Porsche

DeMuro definitely counted himself a Taycan fan before he even had a chance to drive one. When he actually got behind the wheel, that enthusiasm reached a whole new level. There isn’t much to quote from his initial impressions because he is just left speechless by the Taycan’s acceleration. But he does immediately note that the Porsche offers a higher quality ride than the Tesla Model S. He felt the same way about the interior too. More importantly, the Taycan’s driving dynamics impressed him so much that he feels it’s the best Porsche currently available. “It’s not just that the steering is good, the car also handles tremendously well. Mid-corner, coming out of the corners, it feels like a Porsche sports car. It feels like a 911,” says DeMuro. That’s high praise.

Porsche fans should breathe a heavily sigh of relief after watching DeMuro’s review. It isn’t clear if every major automaker will survive the transition to electric vehicles. But Porsche clearly developed a compelling vehicle that succeeds on the merits while simultaneously elevating the brand as a whole. That’s the absolutely best outcome anyone could have hoped for. DeMuro’s review is required viewing for anyone with a passing interest in Porsche or the Taycan.
