1980 924 GTP Prototype Makes a Comeback Bid for the Ages

You know what we don’t spend enough time doing around these parts? Talking about the Porsche 924. Well, my friends, with the 40th anniversary of the model upon us, that all changes now.

But we’re not just talking about any old 924, this is the 1980 924 GTP 002 Prototype racer that finished the 1980 24 Hours of Le Mans. This one, which flew under the Union Jack flag, was one of three Prototypes to compete in the race, along with a German representative, and one from the U.S.

Alas, after being the only Porsche factory-owned car to compete for Britain, this “Sleeping Beauty” was laid out to pasture for good in 1982. So she’s seen better days, for sure.

But worry not, because glory days are on the horizon, as the team at Porsche Cars Great Britain is bringing this baby back to life. To make sure the restoration goes as smoothly and authentically as possible, the team will rely heavily on their network of Classic Partner Centers, including those in Glasgow (suspension and brakes), Swindon (engine), Hatfield (gearbox), and Leeds (plumbing and electrics). And Road & Race Restoration will be in charge of the body work and trim.
