Gorgeous ’73 Carrera RS is a World Traveler
Among the most collectible of all 911s, this Carrera RS has a history even more fascinating than its color combination.
For air-cooled 911 aficionados, the 1973 911 Carrera RS may be the holy grail. Everything about it screams “iconic,” from its ducktail spoiler, to its “Carrera” script striping, to the leather loop door pulls in lieu of handles. It seems that every modified 911 features at least one detail inspired by this model, and it’s clear that the boys in Stuttgart sneak a little bit of the ’73 Carrera RS into everything they can. Simply put, it might be the most influential Porsche 911 model of all time.
It’s a rare treat to see one come up for sale, and this one we found on Hemmings is very special. Its striking, unusual color combination of green with a yellow stripe is something we simply haven’t seen before. Most Carrera RSs that we see are white with a colored stripe, or occasionally yellow over black.
With very few owners in its lifetime, it’s surprising how much this car has moved around, having spent time in at least five countries (that we know of).
This particular Carrera RS was originally delivered in Italy, and the owner took it with him when he moved to the UK. Sometime around the turn of the century, this globe-trotting Carrera went to live in Spain, under the care of the vice president of the country’s Porsche owner’s club.
Upon his death, his widow sold the car. Its next owner sent the car back home to Germany, where it was given a comprehensive restoration by Bale Motorsports. Now, it resides in Dubai, where it awaits a new owner — just in fourth in as many decades. While we’d love to give it a home in the United States, its $900,000 asking price is just a bit too rich for our blood.
