Porsche 993: How to Install Start/Stop Button
If you want to add a touch of modern technology to your Porsche, look no further than push button ignition. Read more to find out what's required to install one yourself.
This article applies to the Porsche 993 (1993-1998).
Most high-end cars today don't rely on keys being inserted into an ignition cylinder. Instead, they recognize a wireless key fob that activates the starter, and then at the push of a button the engine comes to life. And while the keyless fob system is high tech, with some experience and patience, a push button ignition can be installed in your current 993. This install requires some electrical and wiring knowledge, so if you are not familiar, then visiting a repair shop is recommended.
Materials Needed
- Metal toggle switch
- Push button
- Plastic switch cover
- Push button kit (optional)
- Dremel tool
Step 1 – Disconnect the battery
Before you begin any work, locate the battery in the trunk compartment. Disconnect the negative (black) terminal.
Step 2 – Remove ignition
In order to access the wiring harness that controls the ignition, you must first access the ignition switch to the left of the steering wheel. Then, you must use a dremel tool or sander to be able to undo the breaker bolts that hold the ignition switch into place. Once removed, you can access it from below the dashboard; if you need more room to work with, you may need to remove the steering wheel.
Step 3 – Rewire ignition
Because the current circuit of electricity that is now powering your stock ignition needs to be routed to the new flip switch and push button, you must re-do the existing wiring to make sure the new components receive the same power, as well as power cut off. Below is a guide from Rennlist (Figure 5) that multiple members have used before to perform the installation.
Pro Tip
Make sure not to alter or modify any circuitry, as it could tamper the immobilizer system in the car.
Step 4 – Install push button
You first have to pick a location where the button and ignition switch will be mounted. Some prefer it where the key traditionally was, other prefer the center console. This may involve some drilling, or fitting a plate to mount them on.
Pro Tip
Because in most cases they key wont be necessary to start the vehicle, security and theft issues may arise and become a problem.
Step 5 – Test system
Now that all the wiring and installing has been done, it's time to reconnect the battery, flip the ignition switch on, and make sure the battery has been activated. Then, push in the clutch as you normally would to start the car, and push the start button. Your Porsche should come to life.
