Greg, I don't follow your logic; With potential engine scoring and possible failure, wouldn't people be scared to de these cars and rather a 944?

production numbers, there are a ton on 996's and there are a dime a dozen

DE and track are done in warm weather, scoring I believe is from cold engine starts in cold weather and differences between components as it warms up of the engine.

I've also always wondered if it's a case of letting the car idle at low rpm for too long or not revving it out enough. Sadly early 996s are a dime a dozen but examples in the 14-18k range are the ones you need to avoid. It also happens to new 944 owners, "Oh I bought this car for 3k!! What do you mean I have to put 6k into it"

FWIW, 944's and 928's also have the scoring issue to some extent...

+1 I'm personally considering getting a 996 to strip to a track car!!

Get a BoxterS instead. Same straight line and braking performance as the 996 but handles much better because of the engine location.

you can rebuild the engine yourself personally and address all the potential failure modes!
