Launch Control in a Manual?
At PEC in Atlanta driving a base Cayman 718, from a standstill I was instructed to press the clutch and hold, put the car in first gear, and press the accelerator all the way. The engine speed increases and the computer holds it at 6000 rpm even though the accelerator is floored. To get the car to launch the accelerator must be pressed all the way and the clutch released quickly (dumped). A slight release off the accelerator during the launch or a slow clutch release results in the computer aborting the launch by reducing fuel to the engine (idle).
Is this feature part of the sports chrono package, or is it in all manual transmission Porsches?

i would want to see a notification on the dash like launch control activated before i press in the clutch and floor it ...........that said most drag strips starts usually begin the launch around 3 k rpm and adjust up or down according to bog or wheel spin ......have you budgeted for a clutch yet ....you should .these cars are not street light racers never will be.what does your owners manual say about LC

I wonder if there is something special that Porsche does with the SC package to make launches easier on the car? Seems to me that you basically have two surfaces slamming together when you do this, no?

I don't know about the 718, but the 981 does NOT have launch control on manual tranny cars. The launch control was limited to PDK equipped cars that had the sports chrono package.
Your instructor was using the same "launch control" technique I learned as a teenager driving my Plymouth Road Runner manual.

^ This ^ The version you were using was also "first gear only" launch control. I was trying to wrap my head around how the manual was going to continue through the gears with said described launch control.

I get that it's first gear only. Guess the difference in the 718 must be that the revs hold steady at 6k when you floor the gas.
I 'launched' my Spyder once by holding at 5k then dumping the clutch and it worked great. Special occasions only though!

I drove a GT4 at the Atlanta Porsche Experience. It had launch control and I was able to use it several times. I also drove a 2017 911S manual and it also had launch control.
