HELP! Porsche says I need new Pano Roof because the actuator is out!

Damn that blows. No way the pano roof part that doesn't close be taken apart piece by piece or least the defective one. Find it hard to believe that you have to buy the whole enchilada. Mike

My thoughts exactly. I am going to see what can be done. I asked the dealership specifically when the Service Advisor told me one of the actuators was out, I said, "can't the actuator be purchased separately?". His response "Unfortunately not, the whole roof has to be replaced." I, again, reiterated the fact that can't be the case. His response, "Yeah, I know it's very unfortunate". Not to mention, he said that he called Porsche headquarters or something and they told him the same thing that that it couldn't be purchased too. Now, I see that you can purchase the actuator separately with the help of Andy E above!?!? There has to be something illegal about this.
Andy E,
Can you please post the rest of the parts list so that it shows all of the parts and their part numbers for the roof?

I just checked the PET .pdf for the '06 Cayenne and it shows the individual pieces, probably the same pieces on the '08. I entered a few of the parts in Sonnen Porsche parts website and it came up with prices which tells me you can order them.
See if this link works, it should be a .pdf to cover your vehicle.

Found it, download the catalog and it's on pg. 424 looks like same part numbers that are on my '06.

Doesnt sound right at all to me. If the roof can be removed to install a new one. Im sure it can be removed and manually closed but not to the tune of 10k. I find that silly.
Id park the car indoors over the holidays and rent a car rather than shell 10k to a dealer who has you at his mercy

It's common. My GF has a pano roof in her car. 4K to fix on an 11k Mercedes. It is permanently closed.

My '06 CTTS has never had a problem. When it seems to track a little slower I know it is time to clean and lubricate the tracks (about once per year). I clean the tracks and wipe the seals with a cotton rag and use Dow Corning 100% Silicone grease on the seals as well as the tracks. All is well. You don't want to use a Petroleum grease to lubricate the seals, not good for the rubber.

^^Thanks...and sorry I'd imagine you probably never use it now that it's replaced in case something gets messed up again! Definitely going to pass on Pano roof cars that I see--not worth the headache if you can't even manually close them when something goes boom.

I agree, having a warranty and getting them to PAY are 2 different things! And hidden in the warranty coverage is likely clause that says the warranty company is not liable for expenses that exceed the purchase cost of the vehicle. So if you paid $20K for a used Cayenne S, the warranty would never cover more than $20,000 in repairs. My brother just went through this with a new-to-him 2008 BMW X5 with bad timing chain tensioners... plastic from the chain tensioners and either metal or plastic from the timing chain cover (not sure what material it is made out of) were dispersed throughout the engine by the oil system. The failed chain tensioners allowed the chain to rub the inside of the timing chain cover. 3 months in the shop and $21,000 in repairs so he has $1000 in repairs left on his warranty on the car after the 4th month he owned it. They only noticed the problem because he had an oil change done at a place that just happened to have an oil drain system with a screen in the bottom of the big funnel that collects oil into a storage drum. The person changing the oil noticed a lot of junk collected in the screen. Had they not gotten the vehicle to a dealer ASAP, the cost of replacing the engine would have exceeded what they paid for the vehicle and they would have had probably significant out of pocket costs. Know your service contract. Neither of the 2 highest rated warranty companies would sell a warranty on a 2008 Cayenne S directly to the owner (I tried in 2016 right after buying the Cayenne), they did say DEALERS would sell the warranty, but the company itself would not.

I have to say that I do LOVE the pano roof and yes I definitely use it. It just opens the vehicle up so much. Yes, the cost was great to replace it but I am glad that I can actually use it. I am going to keep it lubed up and do preventive maintenance on this new one to try and make it last a long time.
