I know that the early Series 1 `03-06 Cayenne S/T/TS V8's had an ignition coils update service bulletin.

My question is - at what point or Model Year or VIN on > .... did Porsche start putting the updated coils on the new Cayenne V8s AT THE FACTORY?

Was that done at any point in the 2006 MY or before?

... or for the Titanium Edition continuation model for the fill in of the first half of MY 2007 (i.e.: during July - Dec 2006)?

.... or not until the new 4.8L V8 DFI came out in Jan 2007 for the `08 MY?

Porsche has always used the latest revision but the fact is that they are still updating them. We are probably on between the 5th & 7th revision or more. They just came out with another revision about 6 months ago. If you have an '06 you probably have the .05 revision. There are at least 3 revisions or more since then.

That would not necessarily be true, since we're talking about completely different engines AFAIK.

Updates for the ignition coils on the later 4.8L Series 2 & 3 CS are not going to even apply to the 4.5L Series 1 AFAIK.

My question is pretty specific regarding when the CS/CT/CTT Series 1's 4.5L V8's ignition coils update was integrated into production on the factory floor - i.e.: updated on the assembly line.

As opposed to having a CS out there now needing that coil update to be done.

Pano & Excellence have noted in their articles on buying used CS's to look for the iginition coil update to be done in their buying guides.

But then Porsche may have incorporated those updated 4.5L V8 coils at some point between 2003-06.

If so - then when???>

I am specifically looking at BUYING a used `06 CS Titanium Ed. - so I need to know if & when the earlier Series 1's 4.5L V8 Porsche service bulletin updated ignition coils were incorporated into new production.

That way I know whether original coils on one for sale are the updated ones.

I'm NOT asking the generic & global question about updates.

I guess I should've been more specific than I was.

Does anyone know when the Series 1 CS 4.5L V8 ignition coils' update was put into the production cars from the factory? ... if at all?

What I'm saying and check out the Sticky at the beginning of the forum is that they are still updating the Series 1 Coils. 6 months ago Porsche came out with a new revision for the series 1 Cayennes (V8's). There was never one update, they are on multiple revisions. Just read the Sticky at the beginning of the Forum on Coils and you will probably find all the answers you need. Now what version the Cayenne your looking at who knows, but like I said it probably came with .05 revision coils, same as my '06 CTTS, which I have updated to the .09 coils which came out about 2 yrs ago but then Porsche came out with the .20 revisions about a month later, just my luck.

Tom_T, I think hahnmgh63 and I both understand what you are asking, when did Porsche go from version x to y on the assembly line.

Not sure if anyone knows that answer, but if what you are REALLY asking is when did Porsche fix the problem with coils going bad from the supplier and fix it on the assembly line. The answer is not yet, they are still having them tweaked by the OEM. Y had problems so Z came out, etc.

So you could have a model 2007, and the coils could still have the same issue going back.

The pano guide should say make sure you have newer coils done once. But like the cardan shaft, even the newer models will go bad at some point.

I think the below list is all the 955 Coil part numbers, so even if you had 94860210401 replaced at the factory with 94860210403, 94860210405 may have came out a year later and 6 years later 94860210420 came out to fix problems found over time.

VW has the same problem with the Touareg.

Coil packs are not cheap, but of all the problems you could have on a cayenne, I would worry about that one the least, as it can be fixed when it manifests itself without any issues.

I would worry more about the coolant pipes being done, and if they burst, was the starter or the transfer case seal replaced, because one will leave you stranded, other will destroy the transmission if all the fluid leaks out, or at least cost you a bit of change to replace the seal.

My '04 CTT had -03 which I replaced with -09 since they were cheaper than the current version -20.

I gotcha now! It's multiple updates on the S-1 coil packs! Sorry for being a bit "slow"!

Yes - any 06 CS-TI without the coolant pipes is an absolute NO GO!

As for any others - coils, cardan, lower control arms/bushings, timing chain tesioners/rollers/etc. & water pump, & any other major service items due now/soon - then those are price deducts to get them done, have the seller do them ... or a no go on sale also!

Otherwise, the improved 08-10 CS is in our future, & the 06 CS Titanium Edition only sneaks in because of 1 color there which we like.

The factory choices for Cay colors really suck for the most part IMHO!

I'm looking at a couple of low mile `06 CS Titanium Eds. in the 6 month only Iceland Blue paint which we like, but trying to get a handle on which coil packs it would have out of the factory, to know if they're at least the initially updated ones, or still the first version of really problematic ones.

Like the IMS - Porsche likes to duck their QC issues unless pressed, & even then only offers a limited solution still at owner cost, so I don't want to get stuck!

I think they are on revision 12 or so. I don't know why it matters when they made the first revision. If u have old coils change those things out for pete's sake.

Ummmmm ..... well - as I've said now several times as OP - I am LOOKING TO BUY a CS ....

I am NOT asking if I should change coils out on a CS - when I do not yet even own one!

Someone else above listed the revisions, & another listed the relevant part nos.

So are you saying there are MORE than those revisions listed above??

IF so, then please list them in a post.

It will help me in verifying which ones are in a particular CS for sale, when I do a PPI.

But I'd still rather knock the $2-4k for new coils off the selling price, or have it done by the selling Porsche dealer!

You can buy a whole set of Porsche coils for $300 and some change. No Porsche dealer is going to knock off $2-4k because of it.

Perhaps - but IIRC the latest update for the 8 coils for the 955 were priced from the dealers at more than $300. IIRC the parts alone were in the $800-1000 range, but not sure which of the parts nos. noted at post #5 by "Taureg" above that was. Maybe it was for the -20 that John Welch said above were more than the -09 he used, & that you're noting?

But the prices I'm hearing for the parts + P-dealer to install was in that $2-4k range, so the negotiating point I'm referring to here is: install them yourself at your cost, or discount it for my local dealer's quote to do them.

And if that Porsche dealer is already asking $3-4k over current NADA/KBB values, then they may knock more than that $2k +/- off to sell the CS before it depreciates further.

Just as with the coolant pipes update on 955's - the coils are a key issue in my 955 CS search.
