One of the reasons I turn the DRL off is to extend the life of them. Have you tried pure methanol to clean them? I just bought some to clean the haze off the inside of the housings but am away for work. There is another thread about cleaning the inside of them with methanol.
OP - how did you "carefully" rinse this electrical part?
Rinse with the bulb facing down so moisture doesn't get into the electronics in the base. Dry with a microfiber cloth, final wipe with alcohol to remove any traces of moisture or finger oils.

I tried ethanol - "reagent grade" - ie 100% pure. It's MUCH cleaner than methanol. And it didn't touch the haze.

So, you simply worked the rubbing compound in with a dry paper towel and the haze just buffed-out?

Damp rubbing compound. And I may have used a microfiber towel (cheap at Harbor Freight - about $0.50/each when they're on sale.. basically disposables.)
