New trick to stop oil filter leak- learned the hard way
Just did a oil and filter @900 mi. Used a new canister, i know the drill this is my 4th 981 2nd 4.
i get done and leave the car run while up on the lift and i notice some light oil film on the lip of the canister. Check the tightness and its good. So i pull off the filter again of course it slips out of my hand and dumps 10oz of hot oil on my head(unbelievable). So i replace the filter and canister again with another new one.Take the car for a ride and recheck same thing..now im pissed.
So i got an idea that when the canister gets tightened the o-ring gets tension from the rotation. So what i did was loosed the filter 1/4 turn and re-tighten repeated it about 5 times then re-torqued . Took it out for a 20 mile test drive now its bone dry.
From now on when i replace the filter im going to use a technique similar to tapping a hole. Once the o ring engages tighten 1/2 turn then back off 1/4. That way the o ring will seat completely and not be in tension. carl

Ugh. You're putting oil or silicone grease on the oright during assembly right?
I can't change oil on my antiques without making a mess.

The worst Porsche i had for a oil change was a 993TT. Two filters and you had to remove the rear wheel liner plus an oil line. Dealer wanted 400+ and that was 20 years ago. An honest messy three hour job.

I'm honestly to the point where I'll do many services myself but gladly pay the hour labor to have my shop do the oil changes on my gt3 especially since it gets oil changed a lot. Fulfilling? Sure. A hassle and messy as fk. Yup. Same wth axle boot replacements. Take my $$$

I have not experienced that problem in the past. Lubing the O ring is the only thing I do before spinning the filter onto the engine. Next time you remove the filter you might want to check the mating surfaces on the engine. Could be a small issue there that your new procedure negates.

i checked the surface it was perfect and the original didn't leak . I think it would be better to do the filter with the engine cold. next time ill pull the drain plug and let the oil drain overnight and do the filter in the morning. did that with my other 4 and the filter threads in much easier.

Carl,
I put the LN spin on adapter on my Spyder to avoid some of filter issues. So far so good.
