Jim Williams passed away
I am still in a state of shock. I remember having the fortune of speaking wtih Jim on the phone when I was first starting out. He sent me an autographed Linear Technology Applications Handbook (before the web when databooks ruled). I never used it, it just sits on my bookshelf.
Anything he wrote and published, I would save and read. I learned everything I know about analog design from his articles.
When interviewing candidates who mentioned analog on their resume, my first question would be "what have you read from Jim Williams lately?"
If the answer was "who?" or "nothing", the interview was over.
If there was a Mount Rushmore of Analog Design, Jim would be on it, no doubt.

Everything just seems different now. I doubt anyone can ever take their place. I used to laugh when people called me a "dinosaur" for being involved in analog design...not anymore.

Thanks for posting. I had not heard, I am bummed as well. I use to read Jim's and Bob's articles and we often had discussions in the lab about these guys.
Don't worry there are still a few graybeards left to carry the dwindling analog torch.

As it should be.
As I type this, I am looking at a $45,000 LeCroy WavePro 7 series digital scope. A useful tool that I enjoy using.
I am also looking at my Tektronix 7904A scope (museum quality condition), along with about a dozen different plug ins.
Guess which one I trust when things are getting "interesting" ?
I recall stories of Jim hoarding Polaroid black and white film to use with his scope camera to post pictures for his articles and app notes.
It truly is the end of an era. Although there are other bright analog engineers who are up and coming, Jim and Bob were unique individuals in history. I am not sure i am ever going to get over these losses.
