Tracking a base 997.2 :: High engine temps?
Hi folks,
While most people don't experience issues, there are a few reports of .2 owners seeing high oil temps at the track, inevitably leading to discussions of adding a 3rd radiator and/or other mods:
I maybe wrong, but I don't recall seeing any reports of high temps (oil and/or coolant) with the base 345 hp 997.2. Perhaps the 40 hp deficit gives the system that extra bit of margin to stave off heat soak during a typical 20-30 min session?
But just to be sure...
Has anyone experienced excessively high engine temps while tracking their base 345 hp model, either 6MT or PDK?
Thanks.
Karl.

- 280+ degree oil temp at the track
- How to reduce water and oil temp
- Engine Oil Temperatures on Track a Bit High?
- Third Radiator Install - Track Temp Results (mix of .1 and .2 comments)

My car is a 997.2 base 6 MT. Before I added the 3rd radiator, the max oil temp I would see was around 265-270 degree according to the oil temp gauge. Water temp gauge always stayed right in the middle at 175 degree. This max oil temp I saw however was at Thunderhill in August, so the outside temp was about 95-100 degree.
After adding the 3rd radiator, oil temp stays around 260 during cooler days (e.g. Sonoma or Laguna Seca) and about 265 on hotter days (summers at Thunderhill).

Your 265F is nicely under Hatzeback's 280+F on his 997.2 C4S w/PDK and 3rd radiator in similar hot weather.
Unless I misunderstood, it's interesting that the 3rd radiator didn't knock the temps back significantly in your case.
By chance were you also getting faster (thus running the engine harder) after installing the upgrade ?
Do you think it was worth it (~$900 in parts + labor) ?
Thanks.
Karl.

Someone here installed a 997.1 3rd radiator kit ($200) on a 997.2 without any problems. Can't find it now.
