Mobil 1 fake or real
Just got a few quarts of mobil 1 0-40w synthetic motor oil. The caps had unbroken seals but when i opened the caps there was no aluminum seal. Is this normal? Other oil have an aluminum seal besides the lock in the plastic caps, but these didn't. Did i get a fake?

I don't remember seeing foil caps on any of their oil bottles. Imagine what a pain it would be to remove the seals off of 8 quarts of oil as you fill your car.

When you buy oil off the shelf though do check that each bottle you pick up is the right stuff. Stock get mixed around.
Also, check each cap is tight, the seal unbroken. I spotted a bottle of oil on an auto parts store shelf a while back and something about the bottle's appearance struck me as odd and I looked at the bottle closer and spotted that it had been opened. The cap seal had been broken. I unscrewed the cap and could tell by the look and smell of the bottle's contents someone had refilled the bottle with old oil and had managed to return the bottle for a refund or credit.

The lengths to which some people will go just to save a few bucks astounds me sometimes.

Last night I saw an ad for a new TV show called "Gypsy Sisters". They were using Mobil 1 as sun tan lotion! I may have to watch the show to find out if they were upset that the quart container didn't have a foil seal.

There's no aluminum seal, but there is a plastic locking ring attached to the bottom of the cap that breaks free when you twist the cap off. If that ring isn't intact then you know the bottle has been previously opened. Bottles of chainsaw chain lube, two stroke oil additive, etc. have aluminum seals but can't remenber the last time I saw them on motor oil. I use a VW approved Castrol oil in our Audi diesel, and it doesn't have aluminum seals either.

There is no inner seal because it would present a problem if it fell into your crankcase during the filling process. The oil producers had to deal with the real problem of the caps several years ago when they abandoned the old style oil cans--how to ensure that the cap security seal stays captive to the quart container and doesn't fall into the crankcase fill port.
It took them awhile to figure it out but they did. Thus, that security seal is your tamper evidence sign--no inner foil needed. Can you imagine the lawsuits if they put foil inside the caps and that stuff fell into countless engine blocks??

I've seen that in real life although well before Mobil 1 was invented. Ages ago I was a lifeguard at a beach on Lake Champlain. A women plopped down one Sunday afternoon and pulled a can opener and a can of Grand Way (Walmart type discount store back when Sam was but a zygote) motor oil out of her beach bag. She proceeded to open the can and slather it on. I don't remember the weight and I can't attest to the relative merits of Grand Way 10w30 vs 10w40 as a tanning aid, but I seen it with my own eyes...
