Default 2006 with 26K miles - does it need the 40K mile service?

I was told by Porsche that my car could need the service based on time. What are your thoughts?

Yes, not only is it a dealer recommendation, service schedules are based not solely on mileage but on time as well.

All depends on what they want to do to it. For example, oil change yes. Air filter no. Your air filter does not get clogged up by sitting around.

I think at 40K all you are scheduled for is an oil change, air and cabin filter replacement, and a whole lot of very expensive check this and check that stuff. If you are very **** and by the book then pay them to check everything. Otherwise you are probably only in need of an oil change.

You could do the air and cabin filters yourself. Learn a little too !

My 2006 just turned 20k miles last month. I brought it to the dealer for its 20k mile full service.

I don't know if the 40k mile check is different than the 20k mile check, however, the dealer didn't mention anything about a 40k mile check up due to age.

I was told the 40K service included spark plug replacements and all fluid replacements. The car just had the standard service, - oil, filter change and such...

My 2006 had 16K miles on it when I bought her last year. The prior owner already had the 20K mile service done at the dealer, saved me the trouble.

If you have the money burning a hole in your pocket go for it. I wouldn't bother. Sometimes you do more damage when you disturb things.

At ~48K miles and just before 4 yrs I had flushed most/all my fluids(brake, coolant, oil) and replaced engine air filter, battery, cabin air filter, serpentine belt, plugs and coils... I'm on the other end of vehicle maintenance in that I'll replace vs. just inspect. 100% of the labor needed to inspect plugs, for example, is removing/re-installing them so may as well replace them at $60/set while you or a mech is already down there. With a few exceptions such as the plugs/coils (more difficult but certainly doable) most all these maintenance items are fairly easy and a great way to become more knowledgeable of these Carreras... they are truly fascinating machines. If you're a minimalist when it comes to maintenance then at least replace the battery. At 4 yrs the original Porsche battery may be on it's last leg if you don't have it on a maintainer/tender so a good item to replace and also inspect/clean the battery holder/compartment for any leaks. At minimum get it tested but for ~$100 for a new battery from Walmart, Sears, etc... it's good vehicular insurance against a car that won't start up one day and/or some of the freaky electrical gremlins which will start showing at some point. GL and let us know the outcome. I'm always curious about the cost and result of proper maintenance for these cars.

The car has had its 20K mile service completed earlier this year by the previous owner. I wanted them to check out the vibration at idle, as most of us have it, and they said everything is normal but they could do the 40K service and it might help with the vibration...

I am leaning against it as the car runs great.

The maintainence schedule said "Minor Service" every 20k, "Major Service" every 40k.
But exactly what is in these services? how much do they cost? (ball park figure)
People on this site suggest most of the time are just oil change....

What about the big item? like timing belt, water pump? when do they need to be replace?

If you read the service manual you will find out what a major vice minor service is. You would be surprised at how little is done or needed.
