996tt Short Shifter for '03
Hi
Trying to get a short shifter for this car.
Here's what I think I learned:
1. The B&M short shifter gets mixed reviews.
2. Everyone seems to love the "OEM 997"
3. (Someone told me that B&M makes Porsche's oem stuff...)
4. The 997 oem short shifter ONLY works in 2004 996tt's, nothing older.
5 Someone thought that the 997 regular shifter would work in a 996tt, and has a shorter throw than the 996tt.
OK
If anyone has any advice for a short shifting system for a 2003 996tt, I'd love to hear.
Next project.... adding horsepower?

Install a factory PMNA Cup shifter and call it a day... None of the other stuff measures up.

I heard the gt3 shifter is the way to go if not sequential. part number is 997 424 010 91
Powderhound: is the cup one sequential? and is it big bucks?

And yes, you can bolt on the oem 997ssk to any model year 996TT. Takes about an hour. It's a great all around shifter. I ran one for 3 years..

The regular OEM 997 shifter is not worth installing - I did and it makes almost no difference. Go with the 997 ssk or the GT3 ssk, or an aftermarket one like Numeric.

My 0.02: I purchased a used 997SSK from Suncoast and it fell apart on me shortly thereafter....That being said....Meh. Reason for meh? I then proceeded to install the Numeric Shifter and cables....The shifter itself is a beautiful bit of kit, and thus far behaves as such. Worth every penny. That being said, my opine and $5 will buy you a delicious latte at Starbucks.

A few months ago I bought a used Tequipment SSK short shifter kit from 6speedonline. Apparently this kit fits all Porsche Boxster, Carrera and Cayman 9X6 and 9X7 models so I can't really say it's a 996 or 997 SSK. I can report a night and day improvement in shift action and overall feel (much tighter/precise) and significant shortening of the throws.
From the Tequipment brochure: PN 000-044-700-26, 25-33% shift throw reduction, precision needle main bearing, 416 heat treated billet stainless steel stick, 7075-T6 billet aluminum pivot carrier, counter-balanced to reduce shift effort, adjustable neutral stick position, bolt on installation. Exact same shifter used by Porsche on the GT3 Cup cars.

With 100% certainty I can tell you that is NOT a 996 Cup shifter. Likely a 996SSK if it was sold through Tequipment.

Rob is correct. I was referring to the 996Cup shifter. It's a direct bolt on to the 996GT2/3/TT and the next step up from the 997GT3RS shifter. The cup shifter has more metal in it for that rifle bolt feel. If you combine it with the Cup cables and the Cup selector lever you will have shifter nirvahna. The Cup shifter is about $600. You can run it with stock cables if you wish, still a huge improvement.
And yes, you can bolt on the oem 997ssk to any model year 996TT. Takes about an hour. It's a great all around shifter. I ran one for 3 years..

This is great news, I have had no luck with the dealer, or my local mechanic. It says somewhere that the 997ssk fits ONLY on 2004 and newer 996tt's.
I couldn't understand why that would be true, and I am hopeful to learn that it may not in fact be true. I'd like a 997ssk!
Thanks!
