Default 3 Spoke Steering Wheel Crest Repair

I thought I would post my efforts in order to help others with this issue. I couldn't find any solutions online to fit my needs.

My car has the 3 spoke steering wheel and gold Porsche crest but all of the red plastics pieces had either been previously removed or fell out. I wanted to replicate them by using a translucent paint to let the gold foil underneath to show through.

I went to the crafts store Michael's and found the paint in the picture. The label says it is used to replicate stained glass and I think it is a great match. Instead of painting on multiple, thin layers, I used a fine tipped brush to dabbed on small blobs of the paint. This added depth to it and replicates the original plastic pieces. Use a rag to quickly wipe away any excess paint that gets on the gold edges of each small box on the crest.

First layer of paint

Final product after 4 coats

That is most excellent! On mine, the red is fine but the black is worn.

Good to know. That might be easier for folks to find than the stuff I used.

Looks good!

Always nice to do these little detail jobs, to keep the cars looking great as they age.

Thanks. I think it looks even better in real life.

If someone wants to use this paint, I'd be happy to send it your way for cost of shipping. It cost $8 for that little bottle at the store.

Thanks for posting. The crest on my '99 has the exact same problem. I'm planning on doing this when the weather warms a bit.
