991.1 911 GTS vs. 991.2 911 Carrera S
Hi All,
The question is simple. The answer, not so much...
Gently used 2015/16 911 GTS or a new 2017 911 Carrera S? I understand that the move to forced induction has created a very torque forward 991.2 that, when comparing the S model, is faster than the 991.1 GTS. I'm not all about speed/torque though, would go with the manual transmission regardless of my choice, and would drive it 2 to 3 times a week.
Any thoughts from the experts on this forum?

Will you have a chance to drive them both?
There's a lot more to the difference in the cars than just the torqueyness of the motors. When I test drove the .2, that was the last thing I noticed.

.2s is obviously faster in a straight line/in the bends, but if you're looking to make your drives a bit special, GTS
having said that, you can't go wrong with either one, I drive mine once or twice a week, immediate response from the engine and the sound is more than enough to keep me in the "old" NA 911

If you dont really care about torque then I would vote for the GTS, I love widebody cars, and IMO the GTS is a more desirable car. FWIW I'm seeing people getting close to 500HP from a simple tune on the new 3.0L turbo motor in the S trim cars.

You really need to drive them both. If you're into sound, the high revving scream of the GTS is pretty special. .2 is faster and more refined, but my GTS is already too much car for the public roads, and there is a ton of torque up in the rev range where the car is at its best.

The previous gen (991.1) was described as "all fart and no turd" by one well known commentator . I tend to agree, I felt they were dull and lack lusture with relatively ordinary handling and feel for a Porsche. So much so, I voted with my wallet and purchased a 981 GTS in preference. An exceptional car (outhandles all .1 cars with the exception of GT4/Spyder and GT3/RS)
It took the .2 to change my opinion on the 991 as it has much more feel, better turn in, better suspension set up including re-calibrated dampers and helper springs all round. If you want the best all round drivers car get the .2 (you can even get rear axle steering). Make no mistake, the driving differences are very noticeable between the .1 and .2. I'm also lucky enough to own a 991.2 C2S.
The best thing you can do is book a long test drive and come to a decision based on your own personal criteria or perhaps, as an alternate try a 981 GTS If sound is the driver for your purchase there are far far better sounding cars than a 991.1 or 991.2. As an afterthought the infotech in the .2 is a nice upgrade, not a game changer but far better than whats on offer in the 991.1 and my 981GTS.
A couple more comments - you will find a lot of comments from NA owners who don't like the new turbos 991.2/718 - largely because of "sound". I was in the same camp until I drove a 718S for three days - it can out brake, out accelerate and corner faster than my 981GTS - I was blown away with its total performance. Also, I found the sound, although different, was just as raucous as that belted out by the 981 GTS. Likewise with 991.2, the total performance on offer is exceptional, in fact its GT3 exceptional if you have RAS. In terms of engine noise, its a flat six so it sounds like a flat 6 - a bit quieter maybe but still a flat six - but heres the rub you get the full orchestra if you get your foot down to the redline but, when cruising its nice and quiet - that is a trick the NA engines can't pull off.

Whenever I hear the .2 PSE I'm reminded of that old saying - 'if you don't have something nice to say, better to not say anything at all.' If I were going .2, I'd skip the PSE. I think the standard exhaust sounds better.

I always find it funny when 991.1 owners comment on sound - I find it far more interesting when 991.2 owners do - particularly those that have owned NA and or still do own NA Porsches
To the OP the .2 is a better drive - period (every metric supports this, its also better in traffic and around a track - significantly so). It is that simple right from feel to performance.
From my perspective, as an enthusiast, its important to relay information honestly. It doesn't trouble me in the slightest to acknowledge that the 718S is a better drive than my 981 GTS and its true. Its also true that the 718S is a better drive than the 991.1. Unfortunately the badge snobs don't get this - Something I find very amusing.
So why do 991.1 owners feel the need to simply punt nonsense. I left off the question mark as it is a rhetorical question which needs no further answer other than some 991.1 owners are jaded because a new model has arrived which is a significant improvement over the old model. Its the Porsche cycle each new version is objectively better than the last version and at the end of the day they're just cars.
The objective items can me measured and are thus determined - the subjective items such as sound, colour or design elements are a matter of personal taste - items easily resolved by a test drive.

They are different but keep in mind the 991.1 won best drivers car 2 years in a row. The 991.2 came in third. After a Ford Mustang. The 991.1 not being a fantastic driver is all just noise.
