I have a 991.2 only 911 i have ever had. I did have a 981S before this though. I can only speak to my experience. the 991.2 is WAY faster than the Cayman 981S was. to me it sounds better than the Cayman 981S, and in whatever parking lot i am in, the sound of the engine makes itself known, even at idle, even without PSE. Maybe not to a Porsche super-guru, but to any regular Joe walking buy, they all know it's there.

Honestly, why does it matter.

Just drive what you enjoy, and enjoy what you drive.

Life's too short.

The solution to all this hand-wringing is simple: Get a 991.2 GT3... all the benefits of the 991.2 in terms of styling, interior, CarPlay, etc, combined with the visceral thrill and sound of a high-revving NA motor with more power too.

Or, if getting an allocation for one is a concern, buy a used low-miles CPO 991.1 GT3, which you can probably buy for same or less than a well-equipped new 991.2 C2S or C2 GTS. Way better car.

Test drove a 991.1 C4 and was very unimpressed with the power and very impressed with the handling. Sound was OK as I remember but enthusiasm for the sound was overshadowed by lack of power. When I ordered my 991.2 there was no doubt I was going for the S model and glad I did. I don't get this vacuum cleaner sound. Maybe just focusing on the turbo sound and forgetting the rest of the exhaust? I have PSE and exhaust is fine for me. At night I put it in normal mode in the neighborhood because sport mode is a little loud. This is my first 911 so I do not have the long term experience with a NA 911.

LOL! perfect point Al.

I am the one who brought the washing machine comment into the equation. Honestly it was a knee jerk reaction to the .1 guys always comparing the sound of a .2 to that of a vacuum cleaner (I've never had a vacuum cleaner sound like my .2, if I did I'd probably still be vacuuming!).

I also said this......although I'm too old to have a new 911 with a ducktail.

I drove both. I loved the new technology on the .2. Loved the sound and engaging experience on the .1. Decided to save $40k off sticker and go with a .1. Both are awesome cars and we are all blessed to have one.

Default What's one thing a 935 racer never said?

"I sure miss the sound of those slower NA 911 engines."

Why is there so much hate on this thread? We get it, you saved money by not buying the 991.2. But don't pat yourself on the back via insulting people who did buy these cars.

Yes, the engine sound is less emotional. However, it's really peppy, and just a joy in traffic or coming out of corners. Honestly, I didn't have any issues with low-RPM torque delivery in the 991.1 C2S, but the 991.2 is better in that regard. Porsche did a great job in shaping the engine's character. Some people prioritize exhaust sound, others not that much. Handling is definitely improved.

This will stop when the 992 arrives. A new target will emerge.

I have driven 4 generations of the P car. I can honestly say I loved them all, even the 996. Not completely sure why the new generation becomes a target for criticism but it appears we all still love to drive these cars.

I think this thread proves the passion runs deep - we ALL LOVE Porsche! Period. We are all blessed and worked hard to be in this position.

can't compare an older base with a contemporary S... the 991.1S is a vast difference.

Not everyone save money - as may bought the 991.1 new or less depreciated.

I said it before and it's like this.... each 911 is heralded as the "perfect" 911 with no flaws. UNTIL the next one comes out and then all of the sudden there is all of these deficiencies that are uncovered and fixed - even though we didn't know about them before.

Case in point - someone made the comment about the lack of feeling and sub par handling of the 991.1. Remember folks that the 991.1 won the car of the year TWICE and certainly didn't get beat by a dang ford mustang. http://www.motortrend.com/cars/mclar...t-drivers-car/ Each iteration will have more technology and be faster... BUT just like having a fun driving car - fast does not mean more fun and to say that the 991.1 is not fast or has anything less than spectacular handling is just ignorant.

But to say the .2 "sucks" (pun intended) because it sounds like a vacuum cleaner isn't ignorant?

In comparison... The way the engine makes it's power is the real factor that the N/A crowd loves. The Sound is simply an aural extension of that. The Turbo engine just doesn't have "that." No 991.2 driver can it a higher top speed or accelerate faster responsibly on public roads and working the rev band is part of the experience to the NA crowd. Since it's improbable to ever extract the performance of these cars then it's a much smaller differentiator than overall experience.

We can however hear a yuuuge difference in the sound. And 991.2 lovers have tiny hands... as evidenced by the smaller steering wheel
