Smoke on Startup
I think this topic has been covered before, but I was curious to see if the answers are any different with post engine swap / software upgrade cars.
I'm a Cat B guy, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I get a huge cloud of smoke on startup that fills the garage, usually on first start of the day. Normal?

Tim, I've noticed it once in 1400 miles with the new engine. It happened 2 or 3 times in 1000 miles with the first one. In general, this isn't uncommon with horizontally opposed Porsche engines, so I don't know that mileage necessarily has anything to do with it.

Wow. 2-3 times in 1000 miles is so little. So far, it's every day on the first cold start. Granted, it's only been a few days.

I think it probably largely depends on where the pistons are sitting one the car is turned off. I don't get it every time but if its been sitting a day then more likely than not. My old air cooled does it big time if its been sitting a while but less when its used regularly...its definitely nothing to be worried about. a few I know who had the 7.2 gen GT3 claim its no better or worse than their old cars...

Thats an under statement Tim. When I say smokey, Im mean almost completing a phone call to germany to initiate a second stop sale. OK over exaggerated but yes, smoke fills the room. Pretty fun if you ask me. First time Porsche ownership, every unique experience adds to the fun.

So far no smoke. Some of my P-cars smoke every time and some never do. I can't figure this out. If its normal why don't they all smoke?

Mine was smoking during 3 or 4 days at the cold start. Cloud is the good description.
now, starting the 9th day of ownership , nothing. 800kms done.
2 bar oil level decreased looks stabilized now. let us see.

With an inline or V engine excess oil on the cylinder walls will drain down into the crankcase. With a boxer engine the cylinders lay flat so the possibility exists for oil to pool in the bottom of the cylinder and burn off on start up. Sometimes parking the car on a non-level surface will make it worse and other times it seems random.
I guess we say it's "normal" because the layout of the engine increases the likelihood that some oil can stay in the cylinder and get "smoked" at start up.

Tim, no worries. Mine just puffed yesterday and I have over 2600 miles on the new engine. Happens every few days and I haven't been able to find a pattern yet so as Macca said, it may very well have to do with piston position. I have been told told by my mechanic many times that this is a GT3 trait.

Here is a video I made earlier of my exhaust and you can clearly see smoke on start up. Interestingly, seems to come from the left cylinder bank only.
