4.0 is special. Have 996rs and 997rs4.0 parked in the same garage.
4.0 is special and I pick the keys for that 95% of the time.
Haven't driven 991R so can't comment. Have some seat time in 997gt2rs and I prefer 4.0 over gt2rs.
Will be interesting to see if I will prefer 991gt2rs over 991rs.

.2gt3 is not in the same league.

R for its performance, looks and stealth. If choosing between 997 4.0RS and 991.1 RS, the 997 all day long. The photo of the 4.0RS in Mexico Blue earlier is a stunner; the last of the analog 911s too.

Wish we got the 996 RS here. How is it compared to the others? Must be special or you would have sold it by now.

996rs is like a very fine tuned 996gt3 with a little more power.
Doesn't hold a candle to the 4.0l when it comes to specialness. Front end grip was improved from 996rs to the 997rs4.0.
But, the front end difference from 997rs to 991rs is astonishing.

Personally I was a little disappointed in the power increase between 997rs.4.0 and 991rs. The PDK makes the 991rs feel faster.

I really hope the 991gt2rs brings back the "raw huligan" RS feel that Porsche has toned down.

Very few of us that drive these cars on a daily basis so makes it more fun if they make them crazy and wild.

Want the sweaty palm feel back in the RS.

would you say the earlier cars are less refined than the newer cars, with the 991RS feeling like a touring car than a "track car"?

Newer is made to accommodate more potential buyers. Don't get me wrong, still
amazing.
Personally I think that roll should be that of the gt3. I don't think the RS need the DD ability.

I know that I'm a minority. Most would say, that's what the cup cars are for.
I don't agree with that. RS should be for us that want to feel like the pros on our weekends.
And still have a tag on the rear bumper.

What's so special to me about the 991.RS is that it truly can be driven daily as a comfy commuter and when I had it on track I was floored at just how close it really felt to my 991 GT3 Cup car. 4Reelz!

Having had them all, I think the R is the best. Personal preference, but the R takes it for me for 911 based variants.
