I was one of those guys that defended the 997 as last true GT3/RS. I was almost as bad as neanicea (sp) on my zeal for 3 pedals. I hated the way the 991rs looked. On and on and on. I briefly test drove the 991gt3 early on and I completely passed the entire cycle (I bought more 997's). I finally got a 991rs allocation near the end of its run and I almost traded it in, upon delivery, for a different "analogue Porsche".

I've had it for a few weeks now..........WOW was I wrong about 2 pedals, rws, elec steering, etc being a bore. My God, this car is brilliant and FUN at slow, fast and speeds in between. An x-pipe and valves forced open dramatically improved my fun-factor, but so does it on 997 for that matter. Holy crap, this car has almost zero in common with the gt's of yesteryear but if I reach for any keys right now, it's for an over-sized, purple, 2-pedal monster video game car with obnoxious fins and luxo-interior. I'm hooked and I'm here to tell every old-school die hard to drive one hard for a while and you'll be hooked too. It takes some time to "figure it out" (a 5 min drive of your friends car might not do it). Once you push this beast and learn how to extract its goose-bump factor, it will blow your mind.

I have a lowly GT3 but I'll weigh in that PDK-S is awesome. Incredibly enjoyable to drive IMHO.

I have other manuals to choose from. So, yes, I'd buy pdk-s on any modern Porsche platforms. I had the gt4; it was fun (awesome car for the money), but for overall analogue experience, it doesn't beat a 997 and for a modern experience, I'll take pdk-s 991/992.....

Yes, my next one will be PDK even if manual is available. The car is just too quick.

I was like you. I used to say "why even consider that car it doesn't come in manual" and this is why i bought a 911 50th anniversary over the 991 GT3 when they were first both announced

After two years in the 50 i realized the thing lacked performance. I love it but for the money i spent on it i wanted something quicker. I test drove a 991 GT3 before making the trade (it was just around the block) and a slow drive but i could tell just from that short drive that it was fun. I was afraid the paddles could not replace the 3 pedals esp since my daily had paddles and i never use them

11 months later and 7,000 KM of driving i do not regret my decision. I always drive the 991 Gt3 in manual and for me it is engaging enough that i don't feel like i am missing out. I would love to test drive an RS or would have loved to buy an RS but at the time the price to trade did not make sense nor were there many around

If i were to go for the .2 GT3 i would really have a hard time selecting between the manual or PDK-S. I know if i go with the manual i will be happy with how engaging it is but i am afraid i miss out on the performance of that PDK-S.

I agree with the OP, you can't knock a car until you try it and try it properly

Deposit is down on a .2 GT3 and I intend to spec it w/ PDK. I'll accept the RL criticism and get the car I want. I'm in no rush however as the the .1 GT3 is doing me fine at the moment. (Probably a good thing since there's no guarantee that I'll actually get an allocation )

For a quasi-dd + back-road fun + occasional de, 991 Gt3 is an amazing overall performer.

997 3.8rs is the pinnacle of modern performance with old school feel in the 911 lineup (throwing out 997 4.0 for various reasons), but its application is much more narrow than a 991rs. And, they just are not substitutes for each other. I think the difference in experience between 991rs and 997rs is on par or greater than driving experience between a LH and a 997rs; it's that different of a platform. And that's why the first driving impression can turn off so many guys used to the prior 50yrs of evolution.

Tell me to pick one.....I can't. Life is short and I've been blessed so i own more than I should. But I know I could be 99% happy with those 3 listed above.

As side note, 997.1 plain Jane Gt3 best fun+performance/$$$ money can buy.

As 2nd side note, after living in ny this winter, my 4th pick would be the cheapest mechanically sound 996 turbo I could park on street, drive thru snow/salt and not have a care in the world about.

I too only have the .1 gt3 and when I try to explain to others who have never driven one, it's extremely hard to do. I agree, a short test drive will not suffice. I first drove mine and up until I had it broken in and took it to 9K, it's only then when you realize how great the PDK S really is. I'm not as fortunate as others who can have more than one GT car so when I'm ready for the next .2 it will be an easy decision, (I hope).
