One reason for me , my bride of months away from fifty years of joy does not drive stick any longer so PDK gets her behind the wheel and WE have a toy

Oh, it does **** faster, does not over rev and you cannot mechanically over rev it as it will not allow an improper downshift ... I'm sold

Now my '83. Row row row my boat and love it

Default The PDK goes full on "Cowboy" last night...

Holy smokes! I thought I was a die-hard manual lover until last night I got to warm up the PDK and drive it in manual mode for a full on "cowboy" run up the Sea 2 Sky highway. Once the PDK is warmed it delivers these lightening-bolt shifts that have such surgical in precision that you start just banging them off with a ****-eating grin across your face! Sorry - don't mean to be crude, and the manual transmission is a GREAT transmission in the 981 but DO NOT DISCOUNT this transmission! Just let it warm up and drive it like it was meant to be driven.

I'm in my sixties and since the age of 16 when I bought my first car ('68 GTO vert with 4sp Hurst), until the SUV I bought used for my DD (2013 x3 3.5i m-sport) I have never owned a car for my own use with an automatic transmission. None - including my '72 BMW 2002, assorted 3 and 5 series BMWs, several VWs, three Audi S4s, and my Porsche 996. They will have to pry the manual from my cold dead hands .... unless of course, no one makes a manual anymore. Unfortunately, we're nearing that point, since the automatics are so incredibly sophisticated now and faster than their manual counterparts. I still love rowing the shifter. It's nice that my wife learned to drive on a Corvair 700 with a 3 speed manual, so it's never been an issue if she needs to use one my cars.

I'm also fortunate to have a wife that can drive manuals and prefers them. The only downside is the atrocious traffic which is the one reason I will likely never go for a manual in my DD. For that reason I'm happy to see that manufacturers are improving the automatic to allow for quick shifts and more control.

I can't think of even one reason to choose a manual over PDK, but that's just me.

Not intending to start a debate but here are three reasons I chose manual for the Spyder:
1. Reduced weight
2. Simpler, easier to maintain in the long term
3. I like the mechanical act of shifting gears, it makes me feel like I'm a part of what the car is doing.

No doubt PDK shifts faster, performs better and enhances the performance of the car.

Hear you w00tPORSCHE. Comparing my last daily driver, M3 DCT and my current daily driver, Cayman GT4, Cayman gives me more satisfaction, M3 was a less involved but quicker gear change. Sometimes I miss the DCT, but overall the GT4 manual far outweighs the DCT. That's why I am leaning towards manual in my 2018 GT3.

Thanks w00t!

It's interesting. I never consider the PDK an "automatic" transmission. I always drive it in "manual" mode, manually selecting the gears with the aesthetically beautiful shift paddles. But guess I should try in "automatic" mode sometime and see what it's like.

Agreed. There is no way I would let my wife drive my Cayman, not because I'm sexist but because she is NOT a good driver - used to over-rev my 914 all the time, has backed her car into multiple obstacles, and clipped her mirror several times pulling into the garage. My three daughters (and son) on other hand are fine drivers, maybe because I taught them how to drive?

Read the posts. People (including me) have given many reasons to opt for a manual over an automatic (PDK or other). It clearly isn't for you, and you're obviously not alone. The dual clutch automatics are so fast now, I understand why so many are choosing them over manuals. And the market for manuals is clearly down, which is why Ferrari, Maserati, and even most Audis don't even offer one. IMO, it is the truest expression of a real sports car. But, that's just me!

Me, too! I've been driving stick shift for over 40 years, and it is a major part of the enjoyment of my Cayman. If it was my DD and I had an hour of traffic to battle, maybe I'd opt out, but my Cayman is my fun car and shifting gears is a major part of the enjoyment for me, which is what it is all about.
