Emergency release cables for engnie and trunk
I have a 1990 C4 and early 964 versions like mine do not have the emergency release cable for the engine compartment and trunk locks like the later ones have. I figured since the car is going on 20 years old one of these cables is bound to fail.
Has anyone retrofitted the emergency release cables to an older 964? As I recall they attach to the lock and terminate behind the turn signal lights. I believe the rear lock is the same as the original 911, they upgraded it later on - maybe 1991 or 1992.
Thanks

Check out this thread - I posted a picture that shows my installation of the front cable:

I did these last year. I used a bike derailleur cable, and housing for both front & rear The front is easy, you go through the rubber grommet to the directional housing. The rear is a little harder, because you must thread the cable through 2 walls, then into the directional housing. I secured the cable housing with zip ties, formed a loop at the end with a copper crimp cap. Now it's just 1 screw to take out the lens to access the cable.

I did those as well. For the rear I think I pushed the sleeve (bicyle brake type) along the cables that go from the rear indicator to the engine compartment.
After the sleeve has gone though the cable grommet indicator / wheel well, you have to grab the sleeve in the wheel well and push it through the grommet to the engine compartment (I did it without lifting the car or removing a wheel).
Then route it to the lock along the metal sleeve of the 'normal' cable and finally push the cable through the sleeve.
It might be easier from the engine compartment to the indicator housing. (in fact I am not absolutely sure which way I did it)

How did you guys attach the cable to the lock? Did you loop it through the existing cable point (where the factory cable attaches) then crimp it somehow?

Mine is a '92 and the rear catch had two separate mounting holes for each cable. The front had one only, so I replaced it with a new item from Porsche, which has two holes. Thought it would be better than having both cables through one clamp, incase that ever turned out to be the weak point and both cables sheared simultaneously ( unlikely, I know ).

There is one part for -91 and one for 92-. Maybe a dealer would know if the only difference is the second mount hole.
-91 (911 511 052 01)
92- (964 511 052 00)
-91 (911 511 052 01)
92- (964 511 052 00)

I went for the 92- version. Both the -91 and 92- have the same mounting, so straight swap. Mind you, the 92- on has a micro switch built in for the luggage bay light.

My original catch had the switch built in, but just the one hole for the main release cable. Straight swap for the new one. You may find that when you order a new catch, there will only be one option; the 92-. Old part may have been superseded.

I looped it around the pin in which the screw secures the normal cable, above the screw. The loop is made by using one elec terminal block (http://www.boltproducts.com/images/heyco/M6-4.h30.gif) to secure the end of the cable against itself.

I hate to resurrect this old thread but I finally have time to install the Porsche emergency cables that I’ve had for some time now.
In the 1990 964 the front and rear latches are a little more primitive than the 1992 and later models. I see a screw with “one” hole that looks like it can only accept “one” cable.
Does anyone know if that screw was updated to have “two” holes now? I don’t want to order new latches for the front and rear because it’s likely to turn into a huge project – I’m sure both the lock and hood parts need to be replaced, aligned, etc…
If the part exists does anyone know the part number?
Thanks -

I recall this cable connection having two ('side-by-side') 'thumbscrew' holes: one that cinches down on regular hood release cable, and the other for the emergency cable.
Wouldn't that be item # 27? (911.511.067.00)
dcAutomotive has some used ones for 'cheap'.
