"Big Red" Brake Upgrade
Finally finished another couple of mods on the car.
I had been experimenting around with Pagid Yellows on my RSA. There were two problems: a) squealing (to where I was uncomfortable driving the car on the road in traffic) and b) rotor grooving. I therefore switched back to the Hawk HPS pads, which were satisfactory on/off the track. In my quest to start following some of the Euro RS’ around on the track a bit easier, I thought it was time to do the “big red” brake update. I also needed new discs so it was time for the upgrade.
Since my car has red wheels, I did not want the red caliper as the would undoubtedly darken with heavy track use, so I went with black calipers.
I did a lot of my research here on rennlist (thanks everyone!). There are many “Brembo kits” out there, but I found out that purchasing Porsche OEM parts was actually cheaper - Parts used:
Front Calipers (black):
928-351-423-03 (928GTS)
928-351-424-03 (928GTS)
Front Calipers (red):
993.351.425.10 (993TT)
993.351.426.10 (993TT)
Front pad set
993-351-949-00 (standard Porsche)
Front Rotors:
965-351-045-00
965-351-046-00
Caliper Adapters from FVD:
FVD 351 964 499 (x2)
Rear Calipers:
993-352-421-00
993-352-422-00
Rear Rotors:
951-352-041-91 (x2)
Rear pad set:
965.352.939.04
Damping pads:
965.351.096.00 Damping pad 44mm x 4
964.351.096.01 Damping pad 36mm x 4
965.352.096.01 Damping pad 34mm x 4
964.352.096.00 Damping pad 30mm x 4
999.073.402.01 Caliper mounting bolts x 4
I purchased all the parts at Design 911 (design911.com), which included steel braded brake lines – Total price BP 2070 + VAT. The Adapters came from FVD (www.fvd.com) and cost Eu 258 + VAT for both.
Results (with hats painted silver):
Front
Rear:
I also mounted a set of Toyo R888 track tires. All this should be good for a couple more seconds of my times. I’ll report back from the first test day.

I just had the 993 Master Cylinder and Booster upgrade completed on my RS America race car with Big Red Brakes, Alcon floating front rotors and Pagid Black RS-14 Pads. I also switched to Castrol SFR brake fluid. The pedal feel and firmness are greatly improved and definantly inspire more confidence.

In the meantime, I would gut the brake bias valve in the front trunk. It will give you better balance between front and rear. Without the 993 MC, you will chew your front rotors and barely use the rears.

Frank,
You will be quite happy with this upgrade. I have done the same thing although use the pagid oranges. No noise to speak of. You now have more stopping power than you need. It is easy to go past the tires braking threshold. Now you need to loose some unsprung weight. Lighter wheels and or aluminum hats with slotted rotors help too.

Frank, you now have basically what I have on my car. It is not lacking in any way. Best mod that I have done, I love the pedal feel, and I've had no issues. Good luck.

Can you please explain what is brake bias valve? I`m not familiar with that. The reason I`m asking because I will also install Big Reds soon, but I have C4 964 so I won`t need to change MC.

all 964 oem are 46% but the knees change depending on model
knees
C2 w/ 2 piston rear 45bar
C2 w/ 4piston rear 55bar(includes RS and RSA)
to get more rear brake under hard use w/ large fronts many remove the innards from their p/v so that there is no reduction of rear line pressure relative to front, ie relatively more rear brake

Here's more info on this modification:
Garrett's PV Thread
I also have Big Reds on my car and like the results from gutting the PV.

Nice mod Frank, Black was definitely the way to go with your wheels.
Now if you could just find someone nearby that has a C2 with two pot rears that might be interested in upgrading to your old four pots..........................

I'd be happy to support that upgrade provided the person makes a small donation to the Irish Cancer Society.
