993 oil cooler install
After reading all the oil cooler threads was thinking about going the 993 oil cooler route like Patrick and Rod have done. Seems like a pretty clean way to go. Probably get new oil lines as well.
So am under the impression that this is plug and play with respect to the stock oil lines, and that it looks like I will either need an oil temp sensor or at least a bung initially. (Anyone know the thread size for that sensor bung)

Also when I rebuilt my car after the crash, I briefly tried to remove those oil lines from the oil filter housing before giving up and leaving it connected.
Anyone tried this 36mm oil line wrench tool to make that job easier?

cheers

Hi Gregor
Can't quite remember if Sean / JET951 documented this. Might be worth searching for pics under his username. Otherwise he might have some pics. The other thing to think of is where it was located and if you need to remove one of the lower parking lights to open it up to the air-stream.
We did something a little bit similar on my car recently. We had an oil cooler in the ducted setup but oil temps were still getting really hot. So in went another cooler that is possibly bigger than the 993 version and the temps dropped half! Well worth it for the track.

Hi Patrick,
was hoping you might pipe up!
My stock cooler got a bit beat up in the crash, plus one of the lines a bit squashed so was basically looking toward addressing that with a mild upgrade to buy some insurance on those hot summer track days, without frigging around with lights or ducting if possible, given that my engine is only mildly modded compared with your wild-*** machine But yeah I'm not sure if it makes sense without ducting. I wonder what Rod did on that front.
Having a temp sensor bung on the 993 cooler is appealing also.
Sean's handy-work didn't show up in any of the searching I did today.
cheers

Hi Rod,
OK... So I could try it without a fan (I guess you installed the fan up front?), and keep that as a plan B.
Need to do the oil temp and pressure guages really up front.
cheers

I just remembered there is a bit of ducting, the fan is just to assist, I don't think it is essential. Yes the fan is on the front, not a lot of room...

why run a small 1000 dollar-ish Porsche unit when you can go to a big Nascar cooler
used only a few times for like, 50~80 bucks plus lines and fittings ?

This one is far from cheap, but for a street car it is more than adequate and very simple to install.

I was going to suggest contact PWR to get a quote on one of their radiators with integrated oil coolers...but it looks like you've just done the radiator.
The LR one looks similar to what we had in my car initially. Wonder where the LR one mounts in terms of air stream.

BTW, NASCAR typically uses a oil/water heat exchanger. They are expensive, but have a lot of advantages over a air/oil cooler.

Patrick:
Just a note on the combo, I was going to order the radiator/oil cooler combo and Mike warned me against it. He said the 3X unit was much more efficient on its own, so I went this route.

I fabbed my own lines, and have had zero problems so far. Haven't had the car on the track yet tho to document temps.
