Probably aftermarket that took a lot couple time and money to make. I think they look better than the stock ones.
Not my taste. The 928 has a lot of curves, so I really don't think that rectangular headlights work. They did on the mk1 MR2 (hard to believe that the 928's styling pre-dates that), but not here IMO.
Kind of like the the 'kidneys' on the grill of all BMW's, the vintage Porsche signature was two circular headlights for generations. Shame now the new generation has not managed to keep the look IMO.
The COA might be a useful addition to the collection of documentation, often helpful for ID'ing original colors. Otherwise, the PET options for getting info from the VIN is at least as accurate. The ultimate authority though is the build/options sticker in the boot along with the driver's-doorjamb color-code stickers placed in the car at the factory. The original window sticker is the true gospel for what came on the car from the factory.

It's a 928, why would I think it a gold mine? Just trying to get an idea if it is marginally worth more than a normal 928 and would therefore be worth the restoration costs. If not, I will put the money into my 83 911 SC.
I don't think these are the same, but very similar to the ones in the pic. These come off a 82-85 Supra. The top is about 10" wide and long with a 1 plus inch dip at the front. There were tons of these in the yards by the early nineties. The motor connects to the black piece with a circle cut out. This was connected the threaded rod.
Considering the slant nose 911 from this era used 944 headlights (with round lenses) I seriously doubt such a conversion would have been done by the factory with some aftermarket or non-Porsche headlight system.

I can read between the lines you wrote (possibly 1 of 2 ever made, asking the dealer for authentication letter, strongly believing it's a factory original modification and so on). No 928 is yet worth restoring for a profit. People do it because they want to, there is no money in it yet. Better off putting your money in the SC.

You may want to don your thicker skin for visits here, at least until you get a sense for the, um, broad spectrum of personalities.
For the OP, if it helps, I saw this one a couple years ago at a 928 gtg here in Germany. This was a factory car. Sorry, I don't have one with the lights up tho.
Thanks NoVector. That's exactly what they looked like closed. the Porsche rep will be in town tomorrow and will confirm with them. Obviously there is more than 2 since someone posted a red one that was for sale in Orlando the other day and now you have this one in Germany. My guess is a limited run that probably won't affect values.
I will check the build sheet under the carpet as suggested and go from there. I appreciate everyones feed back and help in figuring it out. Even the ones with varied personalities as Dr Bob describes.
Has anyone ever heard of square pop up lights on a 928. The current owner was told by the person he bought it from that there were 2 factory cars built, one white and the other black with this feature but I haven't been able to find any support for that. First thought is that they were aftermarket but can't find any pictures on the net that are even close.
Picture is attached. Any ideas.
I spoke to this gentleman .. he said it was done at Porsche.. looks like some type of special mirrors also.
