Upper bearing removal on airbag steering column?
While I have found write-ups on the removal/replacement of the upper steering column bearing on pre-'90 cars, I have not found any information regarding the same bearing on airbag equipped cars.
Does anyone have any tips on how to remove the upper bearing on the steering column? Is it pushed out from "below" (engine side)? Mine is stuuuuuuck!!! the inner race and ball bearings fell apart but the outer part of the bearing is stuck in there. Any pictures would be greatly appreciated! My '90 column had 3 bearings (top, middle and bottom) and they were all shot, rattling and making grinding noises when turned.
Cheers!

Trying this again
The bearing in the picture is on an airbag steering column. How does it get removed? Pulled out towards the rear (towards steering wheel) or pushed out down the steering column tube? Shop manual has no information on removing this bearing from an airbag equipped car, only pre-'90 cars which looks completely different. Has anyone done this?
Cheers!

Does your column have the "window" cut out on top that gives access to the back side of the bearing?
Have you considered using a pilot bushing removal tool, or some other type of inverse-jawed puller?

There is no "window" on this one, only on the "pre-airbag" columns. PET seems to show the bearing being pushed in from below, but it is hard to tell. I have tried a press to push it out through the "top" but it is not budging. An inverse-jaw puller is next on the to-try list

Carl,
I had never ordered this part before so I think you are on the leading edge of finding out how to do it.

The grease in the bearings was totally dried out and a crunching sound is heard when the bearings are rotated, so replacement is a must.
And now the steering lock is engaged and won't retract (lock cylinder removed)
Anyone removed that part before? Wonder if a bearing ball ended up in there somehow?
Cheers!

I would get a small mirror and have a look at the outer race from the back side. It does kind of look like the column tapers around the bearing. If the race is as thin as it appears in your photo, then you know you can pull it through the opening.
