Our 6-speed Project

I have a feeling there is going to be a good number of 928's running GM trans in the near future.

I had a custom driveshaft made up for my race car, one that can handle the torque loads I will be putting on it.
In this picture, the stock ZO6 driveshaft, shortened and re-balanced for use in our kit is shown. Above that is the larger driveshaft for 800 lb/ft of torque the manufacturer said. He also said that is a very conservative number - they have exceeded it many times without a failure.
We'll see.

Here's a picture of the finished custom-length axles. Many thanks to Mark at 928 International for this piece of the kit. I did not have half-axle cores, and he does (of course) so we partnered with them on this part.
The axles themselves are custom-length brand-new pieces made in chrome-moly. Then Mark's axle rebuilder does a complete build on them so our customer gets fresh CV joints, new boots, everything just like you just bought a new set of axles.
So.... when doing the math on this kit, remember that you are getting a pair of new axles in the bargain too!

Figuring that some might like to review the installation instructions for this kit prior to purchasing, I have put a large part of these installation instructions on-line.
You can download it here:

Texas Dude is correct. The C6 trans and TT are significantly larger physically and would require hammering and modification of the 928 belly pan to make room. We thought most of our customers would not go for that.
So we chose the C5 system - it fits with no hammer involved. No denting. They are also more common and less expensive to buy.
And after-market upgrades to any C5 setup to carry it through 1000 HP are plentiful. There is no reason to fear a C5 trans and TT. Like he said, there are very few 928's who could produce enough HP and Torque to damage a C5 transaxle. But like I said, for those guys (like me) that need them, even stronger internals are available.

Its too early for me to say, until someone brings me a car they want a C6 in (which has not happened yet).
I do have a cusomer installing a C6 6-speed automatic in his 928 - and am helping with parts, but hes doing it himself.

An approximate length for the manual C5 torque tube is 58 inches (1,473.2 mm). A C6 manual is (as per online info) slightly longer. Don't have the info for the C5 auto torque tube length, but should have a C6 auto torque tube to measure by this weekend I'm hoping. Will post the length then.
EDIT/UPDATE: Shipping delay, measurements coming 4/29
Cheers!

Below are the lengths of the C6 auto torque tube. Carl, I apologize for jumping in on this thread, let me know if you want this post deleted. Hopefully it will be of use
Full length of torque tube from front edge to rear edge of torque converter housing is 1,445 mm.
Full length including LS engine bell housing (front edge to rear edge) is 1,590 mm.
Slant angle error should be 1-2mm at the most due to the angle of measurement.
Cheers!

No problem, lets leave it here. I am interested in offering a 6-speed automatic conversion, but you've beaten me too it. What we all want to see is whether it can be made to fit. In addition, what I want to see is how many of my current trans-conversion kit pieces transfer to this install.
Please continue to let me know what parts you need or how I can help. Glad our axle flanges worked for you.
Also: I think the measurement that will be more telling is the distance from center of half-axle to bell-housing mounting plane when the torque tube is attached to the automatic trans. It would appear you will be long, and we need to find out how much we need to remove from the TTube and driveshaft. I have the TTube-to-Porsche bell housing adapters, provided the ID of your TTube is identical to the ZO6 model.
Recommend: use a transmission jack and put the Chevy 6-speed up into place with no TTube attached, just to define your "bump-outs" - where the 928 pan will need gentle maneuvering with a kinetic persuader :-)
You may have already done this. That test will also help you know how well our 6-speed manual cross-member fits on the augermatic.
Good job, and keep us posted!
