Default NorCal owners - I'm passing through with...

A '79 weber-powered OB. I'm buying it tomorrow, and will be flying in to Santa Ana and being taken to the car to drive it up through Seattle.
While I'm down there, I'm going to probably swing down to Hollywood or the OC (depending on where he is) to see my brother at some point.

What I'd like to do, is address any concerns with the car to make the 1200 mile trip home. I have an extra timing belt and water pump (new) from a car I never ended up working on. I'd like to hook up with any of you guys and gals that I haven't had the chance to meet, and get some extra eyes on the car, and if anyone feels like lending a wrench or garage space, that would be excellent! It should be a neat way to do a meet 'n' greet.

While I'm at my brother's shop/set, I'll do some checking on the car, but I do know that the headlights dont roll forward, and one tail light and one head light work. Could be bulbs, but I wont know until I get my hands on it. This will be an adventure for sure!!

Plus, this is a car that was once on the POC or PCA magazine back in the 80s I believe, and has since disappeared, so it should be an interesting one.

I'll be checking this thread today, and my flight leaves tomorrow morning, so I wont be able to do much past today, however my cell is on my hip.
I'm arriving in Santa Ana at 2:30 (supposedly) and I'd like to get some eyes on it that day before the sun goes down, but if not, I'll swing by my brother's and then hopefully hook up with some of you the next day.

I wish I could plan this better, but its a fast deal...

Pics attached! (Only ones I have)

I'll be in the bay area later thursday or friday mid-day, but will really try my best to update my location via my blackberry. That brings up an interesting idea...

I'd be more than willing to do an extended trip up the coast to make stops with anyone who wants to see the car or meet up for any reason, in CA, OR or WA. My only concern is showering

My cell is 425-280-8598, just in case.

Barry:

Although you'll be passing through NorCal on your way back to Seattle, Santa Anna, the OC and Hollywood are definitely SoCal. You'll be halfway home before you enter NorCal. If it's not the middle of the night, you're welcome to stop at my place for a mid-trip check, but I'm about 60 miles out of the way West of I-5. I should be home Thursday if you are passing though during daylight hours.

Check the seating of the headlight combo relay.

Ya know, being that I was born in California, you'd think my geography would be a little better... And thanks Bill, I'll be updating this as often as I can.

And, I think I'll certainly be in the bay area for at least a stop; I've heard the little Italy and China town (among other places) have some pretty tasty places to eat.

Just pull the cover off of the headlight motor and roll them up...

Have fun on the trip...looks like an interesting find...

You might want to scrap your electronic ignition in favor of points and condensers, to go better with your carbs.

You can always call me if you get in trouble, and I'll load up the trailer and come grab ya...

OK, those places are in SF about 35 miles further West. Anyway, keep us posted. I'll PM you my home phone. I only have time in the mid-day hours Thursday as I will be wrenching elsewhere that night and Friday.

You might want to double-check whether the car takes an original timing belt or has been retrofitted to take the later HTD style belt. Let us know where you end up. There are a couple of 928'ers in Sunnyvale, just north of San Jose.

You guys are awesome...
I think this will be a fun trip, and yes, good point on the timing belt! However, I wont know until I start taking things apart. I'm pretty sure I bought the later style belt though...

A concern that I do have are the tires on the car. As you can see, its not a daily driver :-). It does come with a set of new Antera's, but no rubber on them. If I can somehow scavenge a super-cheap pair that I can get fitted to those just to get me 14-1500 miles, I might do that, or maybe I'll figure something out. Trade phone dials for another set of them with better rubber to a willing party?

Having a blowout at high speed doesn't sound like a very good time to me

Did I mention I'm pretty excited? I hear that a lot of the engine parts have been polished at one point, so with some cleaning this could be a real find. I did hear him start it and rev it over the phone, and let me tell you, it gets with the program in a hurry... The builder said with a better breather setup, it should rev to 7500 just fine. Yummy.

I'd say just drive it, if the TB breaks it's not going to hurt anything. Tires would be more of a concern IMHO. And that engine isn't going to last long at 7,500 RPM...

It would be nice to meet you. Please keep us updated on when and where you will be.

Don't feel so bad. I probably know California better than the country I was born in.

And you are nowhere near the friend who called me from New York, NY: "Hey, I'm in America now, can we meet somewhere for dinner?"

HAHAHA... Wow, thats funny, Nicole!

I'll keep you all posted :^) I did just find out that it has no radio and the AC was deleted to save weight... Black 928, no sunroof, hot day, no AC... Well, the leather seat will be nice and hydrated by the time I get back

Hey Dave,
I'd seriously worry about the timing belt, because I'm not so sure its not a non-interference engine anymore. I have all new belts and a water pump in my backpack, ready to go Of course, I'll probably need a hand with a flywheel lock and tension tool when I'm down there though if anyone can provide. 6-pack is on me!
