What kind of symptoms have folks seen prior to a transaxle failure? My transaxle is high mileage and whines in all gears, with a slight knocking noise in 3rd at low RPM. The knocking may be the result of a faulty CV axle, though - I'll know tonight after I replace it.

I'm leaving on a 650-mile trip next weekend and am developing transaxle anxiety disorder!

whining on decel is typically the death wail of a worn diff and its only a matter of time.

My NA transaxle w/ 200k whines like a Bernie Sanders supporter on decel...has been since I installed it over 2 years ago. Mobil Delvac fluid.

The transaxle it replaced had a light fluttering noise (I don't know how else to describe it) for the 6 months of daily use before it failed. After teardown this was revealed to come from the 2 teeth that had broken off the pinion...surprised it lasted for that long after they broke off.

i remember that gearbox...interestint story, that one. Started when I tried to grab 3rd on the highway and it locked me out. I tried again, and the car violently lurched and the tires locked for a moment. sounded like a gun went off. I believe that was the moment the teeth sheared. it had a history of being abused on the track.
