Default Blown 944 Engine Registry.....

Please report what day your engine blew. 924S 944'S, 944T, S2, and 968.

i'll start.

i blew my 944S' engine on Oct 31, 1994 due to negligence on I-10 a few miles east of Junction, TX.

i still suffer from terrrible feelings of regret and self loathing.

when did you blow yours?

if you've never blown up, DON'T WORRY: YOU WILL SOON!!
please report your temporary good fortunes.

oh, and please, a moment of silence to the scores of those long since departed.

I've blown my 2.5l on June 9, 2014.
A heater hose gave in and I didn't notice engine temps rising before it was too late. I was having too much fun on the Autobahn...

Was 16 F out, and about 1.5 miles from home the temp started rising. I thought I could make it home before it hit the red. We tied. I lost.

2 weeks after getting it running (replaced rotten vacuum hoses), 3 weeks after buying the car. No idea if it was a stuck stat, air trapped behind the stat (gasket blew first maybe? And the overheat was effect not cause?), or what. But full rebuild is in progress. Rings, rod bearings, pump/belts/rollers/seals, gaskets, mounts, the works.

Oil in water, water in oil. Right now tore down to the cam tower, waiting on the flywheel lock to come in the mail then I'll get the belts and head off.

On the plus side. I have a set of 88 pistons that are going to go into her. 10-15 HP increase. Yea!

Mine (2.5 8v na) bite the dust in 2007. Belt pulley seized and valves met pistons. My fault, I recycled the pulley and thought it was fine but it wasn't.

Like 99% 944 failures it was owner's fault.

It was in a way good however since I didn't have the will to butcher a perfectly fine car.

Now lets light some candles and pray for those who left the board because their engine failed. What a great modern day tragedy that is.

It's got a Porsche crest on the hood. Once you put that key on your key ring the wallet vacuum starts sucking!!!

But yeah, I've discovered these things can suck it dry fast! It's not really the parts so much, it's the "while I'm in there" stuff you just can't resist cause it IS a Porsche. They just deserve the extra effort I COULD rebuild mine for the price of a head gasket kit, and be done. That's what I would do if it was Toyota, GM, or Ford. But instead she's getting new pistons (just cause I got some 88's), rings, rod bearings, water pump, rollers, belts, mounts, coolant tank, etc.

I wouldn't have gone to the trouble for many other cars. This one deserves it.

Course, love is blind.

Well, I'll provide some hope to counter the sad stories. My '87 S is still going strong with somewhere north of 200,000 miles (odometer gear gave up before the engine). I drive it every day and I'm not shy about flogging it either. (Although you kind of have to flog it just to keep up with regular family sedans these days)

The motor has never been opened as far as I'm aware, just regular maintenance and belt changes.

Popped the head gasket and oil cooler seal 2 weeks after I bought the car, while idling in the driveway.
Milkshake galore.

That was 11/2005...did a full engine rebuild and lots of miles and mods since...no problems.

Odu...how are you going to feel when you pop your LS motor?

Mine blew during the August PCA Enduro race at Mosport last season , lost oil pressure and pulled into the paddocks, tried starting it later on and the engine was locked up ...

New rings and rod bearings had less than 30 hrs on them !

i'm not sure that happens anytime soon. but, you never know. this engine runs kinda hot in extreme heat. shouldn't be a problem in New England, but it's definitely a problem in the desert southwest. naturally, this could be a problem down the road... don't think the engine goes up in smoke from normal driving anytime soon.... but if it does, hopefully by then i should be in a 997 or Cayman to putt around in.... and enough cash to fix the 968. i would ship it to Porsche Doc in Grandview, MO.... have him send the salvagable parts over to Scoggin Dickey, get the new motor, and eventually, with Karl's expertise, see her back on the road.....

what will that cost?

Had a slow coolant leak into cylinder 4 through my head gasket since I bought the car 2.5 years ago. Finally realized what was going on last spring and installed a gasket set along with decking the head and new valve guides before anything bad happened. Spinning like a top now.

I spun the number 2 rod bearing a few years ago on the way to work.
Engine seized up, and that was that.
Had the car towed to a local shop. I had a short block shipped to them and the engine was rebuilt using components off the old one being installed on the new short block.
Runs great, but that one hurt me in the wallet.
